I have been having trouble with my TWM shifter as of late. For the first 3.5 weeks it was great, but it now developed this marble like rattle above 5k rpm. It is especially present on deceleration at 5k rpm and higher. the slightest amount of lateral pressure will make the sound go away. I took the entire shifter apart 3 time and reassembled following their instructions and have not been able to get the sound to go away. Everything is torqued correctly and i have nearly 20 years of automotive experience.
I think it could either be the bushing that fit into the lower part of the shifter or potentially the ball bearings in the shifter? But the way this shfiter works, the ball bearings are not really rotating. If not that, potentially the round spacer that sits on a perch and acts as a perch for the spring that keeps the shifter in tension. I noticed some scoring or wear marks on the round spacer, so potentally that is moving around? I am not sure how it could be moving though, as that would be under tension completely, since the shifter is tightened against it. I attached some pics of the shifter and the spacer twm provides. I also have a youtube video that documents the sound.
The car is 100% stock aside from the shifter and double din head unit. I can tell you that I drove with the center console disassembled and the top dust boots off and could still hear the noise. I drove it with no shift **** and saw directly to the ground beneath the car and heard it. Nothing was grinding on the upper adapter plate or shifter lockout plate.
Just a quick update from TWM. Looks like they said it's install error versus their parts. I would love to see if we could solve this on the boards here since it seems like my best shot to get this thing working properly.
