Cats - Need you opinions on them please.

I've been looking for an used exhaust system, around 600-700, in the wanted section for months. The only probable one I came across was already sold. So, I am giving up on my exhaust idea.

I am now thinking of just getting some cats and saving some money. Maybe RT, Crawford, Kinetix, etc. I was wondering if adding cats will make a noticeable difference in the stock exhaust sound? Will I get an equal amount of gain from that cats as I would an exhaust? Which are the best, by best I mean least problems, solid, reliable and fairly priced?

Thanks guys.

The sound will be louder, not too bad.

I have the Crawfords and the only problem I had was the left cats heatshield would rattle against the frame when the engine was under heavy torque (mid RPMs). All I had to do was bend the heat shield a little (less than a centimeter) and all was well.

It increased the volume of my Fuji a few dB. It sounds great.

I haven't had a chance to check actual performance numbers yet, I'm going to dyno and drag it next week.

Hey

I would go with Crawford for certain..

However, you need to modify the sheet metal around the cat to create additional/needed clearance..

I have the crawford cats and love them. Although I feel the difference I can't really tell how loud they are vs. the stock.

Just understand you are personally liable for the cats and if you replace [with non oem]then you can be made to reinstall brand new oem cats by subsequent owners of the car in the future if they find out by failing a dyno type emission test. When you sell a car you are certifying it is emission compliant.......the one case where buyer beware is not applicable. Even though it passes at the transfer any emission mod holds you liable for the future at least to 100,000 miles. [states vary].

The higher flow cats don't last as long.

What is your opinion on the Helix 200’s? They cost about $445.00 or the Random Technology cats at $640.00. With the exception of the Crawford's and the exorbitant cost of the Nismo cats, these appear to be the only other options.

What's the difference between Crawford and Nismo cats? I think there must be a reason for the huge price difference. I have heard Nismos are not ceramic, is that true?

Here's a quote from Autonet.ca:
It is not uncommon today for service advisors to suggest the replacement of a converter after a 150k interval (typically the period at which converters begin to lose their effectiveness). However, the lifespan of a catalytic converter can be as long as that of the car, if the car's engine is kept in top running condition and its oil changed regularly. Conversely, an engine that runs consistently rich will drastically reduce the life span of a catalytic converter.

Too much gas, not enough air.
