Throttle Body & MAF Sensor Cleaning

My car has been idling hard at low or standing RPM’s. As well, the car stalls during low RPM turns. I have a feeling that I may have a dirty MAF sensor. I also noticed the throttle body was soiled around the inner parameter. Is it mandatory that I remove the throttle body in order to clean it? Also, what are your recommendations in cleaning the MAF sensor?

Thank you!

You can clean the throttle body, but don't disconnect it. If you disconnect it, you'll have to make a trip to the dealer to get it recalibrated, which might cost you. Clean it in place. I can't comment on the MAF.

Thank you for your reply.

What do you mean "disconnect?" Do you mean do not remove the four gold long allen bolts and remove the throttle body? I have removed it twice before. However, I did not literally take it apart. I simply removed it and lightly wiped the inside of it and replaced it. The other time was when I installed the Kinetix Plenum. I had not other choice than to remove the throttle body.

As far as the MAF, I removed it and cleaned it with Electronic Cleaner. The car appears to run normally. There are no idle issues that I see nor does the vehicle exhibit odd behavior.

He means don't unplug the electrical harness.

I am confused. In order to install the Kinetix plenum, one must unplug the electrical harness from the throttle body. There is no way around it. According to Nissan, they said unplugging or removing the throttle body and MAF sensor has no adverse effect. Perhaps I am wrong, but this was what I was told and my understanding.

How many miles on your G?
I have 27k and my TB plate and a bit of the housing on the bottom has carbon buildup
Was thinking of taking some Seafoam and cleaning it out but didnt want to mess anything up in the process

My experience with disconnecting the TB electrical harness says that it works perfectly after reconnect. I just plug it back in, start it up, and it idles perfect and runs like a striped-assed ape. If it didnt, I would just do the ECU and throttle position reset procedure and be done. No need for a trip to the dealer.

That is correct. Always remove the TB prior to cleaning it. I removed the MAF sensor and cleaned that as well. No problems whatsoever.

I didn't have to unplug the harness to install my Crawford plenum. I've heard that after unpluging the throttle body that some people have had really strange idle and stalling problems. I decided not to take the chance and left it plugged in.

According to the FSM, if you disconnect the throttle body, etc. you have to run through the full recalibration procedure to get the ECM to re-learn the target idle speed and throttle position sensor range. This learning process actually includes several steps, and can be done without the dealer using the 'accelerator pedal' method described elsewhere on this site. The steps are:

- Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning
- Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
- Idle Air Volume Learning

The folks who disconnected the wiring haress and experienced rough idle probably didn't run through these procedures.
