I've read all of the reports about the ECU adapting to a driver's style. So, it will chill out if you drive like a granny. But, does that mean that if you start to dog the car for a while, it will adapt back to higher performance? In other words, will it adapt "up" in performance if needed?

I bought a brand new Sedan 6MT last week, but on the day I went to pick it up, I switched it for an auto because my wife will destroy a clutch in short order. They had to redo the paperwork / titlework, but I paid the same. My last car was a 5 speed M-Coupe, and as I awaited my new auto (I had to then go back the next day to get it) I was really worried that I would not be happy without the MT, but after a few days in it I am smiling every mile. I wish all automatics drove this well.

Yes, it adapts in either direction.. it just takes a little time, measured in days (not hours) to do so.

Molly, the adaption in the engine is the same as in the M coupe and all bimmers. All OBDII engines have this built in to account for wear, manufacturing variances, octane, etc. The AT is adaptive as well based on how you drive- BMW steptronic is similar. Glad you enjoy the car.

 

Yes, but the BMW Steptronic has a Sport mode that dumps the adaptive pattern and uses a pre-set aggressive pattern when you want to have fun. *sniff, sniff* [img]/w3timages/icons/frown.gif[/img]

Yep, BMW trans. has sport mode that igors the adaptive memory; although I don't know if it effects the engine ECU.
I have had my G35 coupe for about 4 months now and have not tried the reset yet. However, I feel the transmission is shifting better now than when the car was new. When new it seemed to stay in gear to long - sometimes I thought it wouldn't shift until I let off the gas. Now it seems to be perfect. Does that mean it adapted to me? So, now I wonder if a reset will be an improvement??

 

Yeah, I don't really have much to complain about the G35's transmission's choice of times to shift. If I'm being aggressive going into a corner, it tends not to come out of the corner in the correct gear if I leave it in D, but that's what the manual mode is for. It may not be as good as a Steptronic, but it's a whole world better than the auto on a 92 Accord.
