Pulleys good or bad?

I recieved pulleys from Stillen the other day and I wanted to put them on sometime this week. However I was talking to a service guy from Infifniti and he told me not to put them in. When I asked why, he told me that his shop has gotten 3 g35 coupes that had the pulleys in them and that they all threw a rod. So can you guys help me on this one, what should I do?

Pullies is a area of expertise that Unorthodox pretty much own's. I really wouldn't trust anyone else in the area, in any way shape or form, IMSC (in my strong conviction).

"Under-driving is achieved by reducing the diameter of the crankshaft pulley, which over-drives the crankshaft and under-drives the accessories."

I'll be worried about any warranty issues with this. Dealer can blame overheating (water pump), Charging system (altenator), other accessories. Yeah it gives more horsepower, but the risk isn't worth taking.

for 5 hp and 3 ft-lbs they got on the 350 z it doesnt make sense to risk any possible issues.

Re: Pulleys good or bad?

Pulleys are a great idea. They only free up 5-10 horse depending on who's lying, but make the engine much more responsive. I haven't put them on my G yet, but had them on my 95 6spd Z28, plus some other stuff too. VERY NOTICABLE! Gsedan35 gave good advise saying to stick with Unorthadox, as they have the most experience. Whatever you do, DO NOT remove any harmonic balancer from the crankshaft. Doing that royally screws your engine.
Good luck

Re: Pulleys good or bad?

Unfortunately there's no way to run UR crankshaft pully on a G35 while retaining the harmonic damper at this time.

The major power improvement from under drive pulleys is the reduction in rotational weight. (So long harmonic damper!)

There was an extensive discussion on the Tech & Mods (or other G35Driver) Forum. Several folks including the President of UR posted in favor of them. Others, me included, cautioned against running without the harmonic damper.

I guess the decision still remains with the individual G owner.

Re: Pulleys good or bad?

Too bad we don't actually have any hard evidence of the problems on a Z/G. Just anecdotal stories - and I trust service writers about as much as salespeople. Find it hard to believe 1 dealer would have 5 G35's w/ pulleys (they haven't been out all that long, less than year) that ALL threw a rod (a highly unusual occurrence in ANY circumstances). There are plenty of people with Maxima's (very similar engine) who have individually posted about running pulley's for years w/ no problems but I haven't actually heard any one person step forward and say "I had them on my _____ nissan and they caused _______ problems." Too bad there isn't more hard facts about long-term usage on the pulleys - because the concept behind the mod. seems sound. And although the Dinan article is good info - it's risky comparing that kind of stuff from one manufacturer to another w/o knowing engineering data on how the engines differ or are similar.
