I think w/ a lot of Texas shows, some of the coordinators are considered "independent" and the culture out here is so small in comparison to Califorina, that coordinators can't really afford to be selective. In order to make money, they will accept who ever's willing to pay the entrance fee.. That's how you get a variance of cars where a "show" ends up looking like a "meet"..
Wekfest is trying to uphold and continue to build a name and reputation for themselves as an elite show only attracting the best of the best.. Being extremely elective helps them also attract serious vendors, models, photographers, blogists, mag coverage, and even a certain demographic of spectators as well.. Open your Super Street and Import Tuner Mags, you'll see wekfest coverage whenever they have it.. Same can be said for XDC and Remix shows.. If you take yourself seriously, and are exclusive, you garner more attention and will be taken seriously by others..
I don't think they're trying to intentionally hurt people's feelings but instill an air of competition and inject some life into the culture in other parts of the country.. Why should they compromise on their standards so that more can participate.. I'd rather see 40 or 50 SICK rides than 250 of varying modification levels.

For just San Francisco alone, there was over 1400 applications that came in! Registration was only open for 2 weeks....it was that crazy. Only 470 cars were selected. Wekfest didn't even recruit crews and cars to enter like HIN or SPOCOM....yet major magazines were quoted saying wekfest is the best show they've ever attended. Lines were over a mile long and nearly 3 hour wait in line. Returning fans appreciate the screening process for applicants.....
