need computer/laptop help
my friend has a sony laptop model PCG-4K1L.. he said he dropped it (from bed to carpet) and the screen stopped working.. soon the computer wouldnt start at all... from what i remember he said geek squad told him he would need a new mother board.. does that sound right? if i pull the hard drive how can i link it to my pc to save the files ? thanks
if he needs a new motherboard, he shouldnt lose any of his stuff from his hardrive
also, i dont see how it would have messed up his motherboard... maybe mess up a wire to the screen or something.. but idk, anything is possible

eh, the screen not working could just be the inverter that powers the monitor, they are sensitive. Now you say its not powering up, it might just be coincidence.
I believe thats the laptop, he prob paid a pretty penny for it. Its going to cost a lot for Geek squad to get a new mobo and install it. Might see how much sony might offer. Or another shop.
or it might be better just to get a new one.
Have you unplugged all power and battery from the laptop for 30sec+ and plugged it back in? that can fix minor issues. If it hasn't been done.
And yes, all you need is a 2.5inch HD enclosure and you can just plug the hard drive via USB and you'll have full access to all his info, thats if the hard drive didn't take a dump as well, which it should be ok.

he already has a replacement laptop..this happened months ago.. he gave me the laptop recently to see if i could do anything to fix it. it hasnt been able to power on at all since ive had it
did you try the little trick I said? It will seem to be a paper weight, unless you want to spend 300-500 + to fix. Imo you can get a net book for less then fixing it and will be more powerful. just saying.
But Seems somethings defective.

and the plug for the wall? remove all power from it. any how
^ its prob the mobo, its dead if its not powering on at all.

the mother board is prob dead. take out the hard drive and put it in an enclosure to get the data out, but hard drives tend to also fail after a computer has been dropped. since they are spinning so fast, unless it wasnt really running when it fell
If you need to take the hard drive out and get the files, I recommend this:

This is what I'm buying (today, actually, because today is the last day for the listed price) for my macbook. You take the hard drive out & plug it into another computer, pretty simple. I'm not sure if this exact model works for both Mac and Windows, but I think it does.
Edit: I was also quoted between $250 and $500 to "restore" my macbook... My friend who used to work at the Apple store recommended this for me to try first. If I can spend $25 and recover all the old files myself, it's soooo worth it. Tell your friend not to pay that much if he doesn't have to.

Thanks! Not to hijack the thread, but the startup disk is full and it can't read it to boot up. When I turn it on, I get a flashing question mark. My CD drive doesn't work so I can't insert the OSX disk. I'm going to get that hard drive reader thingie today although I probably won't get around to messing with it until the weekend. I'll let you know if it doesn't work. If it doesn't work... I don't know what I'm gonna do because that computer has 3 years of my life on it.
or just get an inexpensive external sata adapter (assuming the hard drive is sata) and connect via USB to another computer. Assuming its using the same OS, you should be able to see your files.

there are much cheaper ones out there that will do the job
