As for that pic, there was obviously a SUBSTANTIAL ammount of side pressure, could have even jumped a curb or who knows what. I've seen really strong wheels shatter in an accident, so one close-up, out-of-context shot doesn't really mean anything.
That would be roughly the equivalent of me posting a pic I have of a burned down 09 BMW 5 series and saying all German cars eventually burst into flames
