w/ about a 1k budget you can build a top of the line comp, dual core processor, invidia 7800gt, etc...

1) building a top of the line computer is well more than $1000 (iv got one in mind that will cost $2079 in parts + shipping) & 2) cheap computers can not be built cheaper than they can be purchased (only high end ones can be) |

If you want a cheap computer buy a Dell. If you want something better, faster, more rugged, or higher quality, build it yourself. Generally, people who know exactly what they want, can build them... That's why I buy 'em at work and build 'em at home... :) |

Well it depends what you want the PC for. If you need it for Email and word processing - Yeah go get a dell. If you want to have your own Media library - Movies, MP3 and photos - build one for yourself. I have been able to build great systems for 1,200 or 1,400 that work as central servers at home for all of that ... but then again if your going to load it up with ... other things ... keep it in your room - but make sure you get a great video card! :)

Get a dell with LCD for 500-700 bux and be done with it. No better deals out there for computer noobies.
