Lightbulb Very close to pulling the trigger and going FI

Okay I know that this question may have been asked over and over again but I just want to be on the same page when I do this. I have had many FI'd vehicles, mostly built Hondas with turbo setups (of course why not there cheap, easy to build and if you break something it doesn't cost much to fix). I am currently going to start looking into either a Vortech SC or and ATI Procharger. My questions are what are some of the problems you've run into and why. Also for those of you running on stock internals how are you setup (ie Greddy E-manage Ultimate, UTEC etc). I want to do a build but not at the moment and also for how long and how safe do you think a stock block will hold up under a reasonable amount of boost? Currently my car is an 04 6mt with 38k. Thanks for the answers and input guys/gals

I hate to be the guy to say to try dig through the threads with the search button, but you probably should read up on other people's dyno numbers on the stock block etc, and what exactly has gone wrong for the people that did hurt their engines. There's lots of different setups and the guys pushing higher power on stock blocks usually have a lot more going on than just a FI kit slapped on the car

In most cases THEY caused it by running too lean, too much timing, reving beyond redline under boost, general lack of knowledge - they hear something bad, but don't have a clue what it is, and end up hurting their engine when the damage could have been prevented

Just follow everything by the book - good install, good tune, good gas, don't over abuse the engine, have some gauges so you can monitor what's really up with your engine, etc

get some basic safety things for the engine like a bigger oil pan or spacer, oil catch can, A/F and oil temp gauges and probably boost gauge. Use synthetic oil. Stay on top of oil changes - change well before 3000 miles if possible, not after. If driving hard or tracking, change oil even more often. Use 1 step colder spark plugs - iridium is usually prefered

that's about it

Eric, I talked to you about this during HIN, but I will reiterate myself..

1. What's your budget?
2. How much power are you looking for?
3. How long do you plan on keeping the car for?

That being said, either get a Vortech or TT. Don't bother with ST imho. Vortech will net you just under 400whp and be fairly reliable, but nothing is certain with FI. If you have a little more money to spend, get a TT. If you blow, you can rebuild and go for more power.

Oh, and search (sorry, I had to ) You'll find more answers on my350z.

Eric, you know I've been down this road for a while now. I had the Vortech, ditched it, and went with built Greddy. If you wanna talk about it hit me up

Do it!!

You can run for a long time on a stock block if you get a safe tune and stay ~380-400whp.

Sounds like a plan. Andy the budget isnt an issue but I just want to make sure it gets done right. I know your tune was running good when you had the Vortech but I just want to be sure before I do it. I plan on sticking with the G for a while so this is going to be one of two toys! I am gonna try and link up with you so we can talk sometime this week. When are you going to pick up your car?

If you do go FI, definately get a good install/tune. That'll definately help. But, in the end, there's always a chance you're going to blow something. I think there was a guy running a stillen kit on my350z who blew his engine...maybe rods...don't remember exactly.

No problem. I'm picking up my car either this Friday or next weekend. The only things left to do are the fmic, bovs, and gauges. I'm still waiting for my exhaust to be drop shipped from Greddy, though. They're notorious for taking a very long time to ship stuff. It took 2 weeks to get my TT .

If you ever feel like goin for a ride, you can go down to the shop in Manchester and talk to Scott. He'll help you out. He's got another Greddy to do soon though (Hyunjin's friend) so if you're gonna do it, you should do it soon. Scott will also match any price Sharif gives you and he's direct with Greddy, Tein, Stoptech and a bunch of other companies so his prices are always good and they get delivered right to him which is a bonus.

have a turbonetics kit on my car, problem free, smooth, and reasonably priced. i say do it, with whatever kit you get though, be sure that the a/f ratio is good and also make sure you dont go over 8psi on stock internals and you should be fine. btw i put the kit on my car when it had 32k miles

^Is your CEL on? Also I've spoken with some who have the TN kit with Utecs and they tell me when they jump on it the ECU goes into limp mode.

no CEL as of yet. so far its been 3 weeks and 2500 miles on the kit.
i have the technosquare reflash that came with the kit, the only time i have gone into limp mode is when i really get in the throttle hard and its really cold outside. you prob better off with a utec so you can tune it depending on the climate, especially since your further north than me.
