Is an intercooler "necessary" for a supercharger?

Hi folks, I was looking at the Stillen SC for the AT Sedan and there is a version (stage 1) without the intercooler that's about $1K cheaper. HP rating is about maybe 20 less. So I'm thinking, do I really want to spend the extra $1K for those 20 horses or would thes stage 1 be good enough? So here's the question, other than the improvement in performance, is there a good mechanical reason for getting an intercooler? Thanks.

Andrew

One word: "durability" of the engine

Without an intercoooler, a supercharger is just a pressurized hot-air intake. Go the extra nickel, and you'll seldom regret it.

We opted for the stage 2 setup on our coupe here for the added protection. I'm not sure how effective the radiator setup will be when it's over 100ºF (which it is for about 100 days a year here in Phoenix) but it's going to be better than nothing. If you were to go drag racing, you could find a way to get really cold water in there too, further helping the efficiency....

You will want it if you ever try to squeeze any more out of your SC system. And the harder you run your car, the more likely you will need it to preserve your engine life. Sure would suck to melt down an engine because of FI. Damn sure you would void your warranty there!!

There are a few things you can do when you add a S/C to keep the engine from pre-ignition, which will damage your engine. Reducing the temperature of the air coming in is one. Higher octane gas is another. The more of these things you employ the safer it is for your engine. I can understand your desire to save a bit of cash (now) but in the long run are you really saving?

Hey Justin, have you guys installed any S/C's for customers here in the valley? Just wondering if there has been much demand at all.

Ditto to everyone else. And think of it this way: The extra power you get from an intercooler is really a bonus. You really want it for the protection and durability. No reason to cook that motor any more than you have to.

No, we haven't done too many superchargers for local guys here in Phoenix. The only car I have to show right now is our Stage II equipped car. I hope to get a Greddy kit installed on a car sometime soon though.

Yes, they come with a sealed unit that ties into some of the factory sensors and is pre-programmed from Stillen.

Thanks!
