5AT Not Suitable for FI
5AT Not Suitable for FI
I have been communicating with APS regarding their turbo system and in the course of that, asked them about the ability of the 5AT to handle significantly increased HP and torque. APS referred me to a shop they considered experts on this trany called Level 10 in NJ (973) 827-1000.

I called Level 10 and asked them the same question. I was told that the 5AT OEM cannot handle FI for very long. They recommended two of their upgrades, a torque converter upgrade ($600) and a valve body upgrade they call HydroSystem ($700). Their projected turn around time is three business days.
How much of this is marketing, I don’t know, but they seem to come well recommended.

Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
Level 10 definitely know what they are talking about - they are some of the best at what they do - BUT, they are wrong that the tranny cannot hold F/I... there are many 350z's w/ 5AT's that are running (and have been running) F/I - now, if you're looking at pushing over 400 whp, I would definitely look into their upgrades, as it would pretty much make your tranny bulletproof while also shortening shifts dramatically (via valve body upgrade) - contact Gurgenpb, he tends to know a lot on this topic...

Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
Same tranny handles 340hp from VK on Q45/M45.
So I think it is fine. Unless it sees a lot of brake launches daily.

Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
I think that in most cases....the auto trannny is inherently stronger than the manual.
Most factory turbo cars came out in auto mode first before they could design a beefed up manual.

PM Gurgen on this subject as he is currently running a TT setup.

Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
The problem you are going to have in the A/T with a TT is hitting the rev limiter since the shift points will not be fast enough. I have spoken to a few tuning shops and the way you remedy this problem w/the A/T is either reprogramming the ECU to make make it shift quicker or get a valve body upgrade which Stillen now provides.

Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
Raise the rev limiter to 7,200rpm and it will shift . Thats what us AT5 SCer guys are doing . Mine shifts at 6,800rpm
Couldnt afford it when young...gonna play when Im old

Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
The 5 AT is capable of handeling FI. I have an auto tranny that ive been driving on for roughly 5000 with FI. I am currently on the Speed Force Racing TT kit. Everything is going very well. No problems so far.
Re: 5AT Not Suitable for FI
it wil lshift without either...but i do have a TS ecu with a raised redline.
If you give the shift signal in MM mode at around 5-5.5K rpm, it will shift at 6700, right before the rev limiter kicks in.... But yes, in full auto mode, it will not shift wthout the ts ecu.
