Question to all the FI gurus.
Question to all the FI gurus.
I'm thinking of purchasing a Vortech Supercharger for rev up from a member on this forum. I have few question that needs to be solved so can someone please help me? thanks.
1. The uni-chip thing, which is a piggy back i'm guessing. Is it safe to run with it? Or should i go ahead and get a real tune on a dyno from a reputable shop? I think i will be satisfied with stock boost. But i'm not too sure about piggy back stuff.
2. I am thinking of installing it myself, i have some what of skills in me. Have done few motor swaps/ turbo install on few vehicle but never supercharger. Will you think i will be able to install the vortech without any kind of special tool needed? or something that shops can only do?
3. The kit also has 12,000 miles. How long do these kit usually last before something starts to mess up?
4. Will the stock clutch hold up the power it will be making? Or will i have to go ahead and upgrade to aftermarket clutch??
Thanks guys for your help.!!

1.) Uni-chip will work... everyone has their own preferences here. As far as being a piggyback, a lot of guys make great, fairly reliable power on them with no issues. I've always run piggybacks. Three years, and for my set up it works. You MUST get it tuned RIGHT away! Do not use the tune that is on the UC for your car! Dyno and street tuned, at least dyno'd by a RELIABLE VQ tuner... one you trust... and they also must be comfortable with the UC. Some tuner only like working with certain ECU's.
2.) Shouldn't be bad at all. Hardest part will probably be tapping oil pan. If it's the unit with the self-contained oil, then it'll be a breeze. Either way shouldn't be bad. The person you are buying from should have the instruction manual which will let you know what tools are needed. I would suggest having your tuner look over the install for giggles.
3.) No oil issues, keeping it clean... it should last you long enough you don't need to worry right now. Of course, you never can tell how well it's been treated up until this point. As long as the seller is reputable and when you get the kit it looks to be good shape you'll be alright. I know the Vortech is cheaper to get rebuilt then the ProCharger. I've seen $400-$600 figures.
4.) Depends on how you drive it. Stock boost you won't be making much torque, so it should have a descent life span if you aren't launching, slipping the clutch a lot or banging every gear. Do you race often now? When you you're boosted the temptation will be even greater, and every one will either want you to race, ride with you, or show 'em what you got when you leave somewhere... all that will start to shorten your clutch life quickly. I would have enough money for a new clutch by the time you have the SC put on.

^ what he said. as for question 3, i'd send the blower to Vortech for a rebuild regardless of the seller. you never know if its been overspun, starved of oil, etc. (the seller may not even know) so your best bet is to get it professionally rebuilt before you install it.
