Tired of my G35 Vortech tiny air filter - building a CAI with larger filter

Soooo tired of having to squish the tiny air filter on my G35 Vortech S/C every time I clean it.....so I've decided to put together a cold air intake to relocate to a larger air filter. Just starting on the project so I'll continue to update this thread. Once I'm done, I'll add a complete parts list if others are interested.

First step...bend the A/C condenser line to get clearance for a 90 degree elbow coming off the S/C in the direction of the open space in the driver's side fender below the drivers side headlight:

Fenders on, headlights in, inner fender liner roughly in place...checking clearances to mark the location of the new and larger air filter location:

a quick visit to to K&Ns site for the calculations for the correct size of air filter will show that this around half the size required im m working on a similar solution that places the air filter just inside the the front inner fender liner

G35
I did the exact thing for mine as well.Although mine was mandrel bent and I actually used AN bung and welded it in the pipe and barb AN fitting for the Vac line. Came out rather nicely. It's up enough I'm not worried about rain and down enough for fresh air from the mouth. I do have a wrap on it as well.

Good job man! Looks good!

Good to know.

I'm going to a AirRaid SythaMax filter with approx. 30% more surface area than the air filter that comes with the Vortech kit. Nice thing about the AirRaid filter is I can also get the AirRaid Pre-Filter 5 Micron bag that goes around the filter. The Pre-Filter keeps most dust and debris from ever getting to the air filter, so you clean the air filter less. The AirRaid Pre-Filter also has so little reduction on air flow that it's almost not measurable.

Does that clear the radiator and a/c condenser lines? Seems it would stick forward too far.

props to you for the DIY

i have to ask though, why not just use a 90 degree silicone elbow coupler rather than a hard pipe? others on here and my350z have gone that route. it makes for a simpler install and there's no risk of damaging your A/C lines.

Personal preference mainly, I just like the look of the polished aluminum hard pipe versus a silicone elbow. It matches the polished blower a bit better.

I've got plenty of room between the hard pipe elbow and the A/C condenser lines now that I've rerouted the lines differently than what the Vortech install instructions described, so no worries about rubbing for my setup.

You did it the hard way. I just used an off-the-shelf 90 degree silicone coupler with a small section of aluminum pipe. I didnt need to modify or move anything to make it fit.

Like Big C and Shane mentioned its much simpler using a silicone coupler. I used 3" stainless piping to blend better with engine bay.

i paid next to nothing for it... and I know it might need a twist here and a "clearance" there.. but if it doesn't fit I will try something else... once the kit is installed I will have a better idea what to use

What size filter did you use for the fender well filter location? I've got this done, but it is easier for me to type it here than go and take it out...
