Thumbs up Sport Z Supercharger Shootout Info

This may be old news to some, but for those who haven't done so, you might want to check out www.SportZMagazine.com. Click on the Downloads. There you find lots of good information including the dyno results from our Supercharger Shootout.

A suggestion. When reviewing the dyno sheets don't forget that peak horsepower isn't everything. Look at the torque and the area under the torque and horsepower curves (mean torgue & horsepower). This provides a better picture of how a SC G35 or 350Z will behave on the street.

Speaking of SportZ, I just got my issue last night which had the turbo shootout. It was a decent article, but there were a couple of things I would have liked to have seen:

1. overlay of all dyno graphs on top of one another
2. 0-60, 5-60, and 1/4 mile times

I realize it may not be an apples to apples comparison for #2, but it's better than nothing. It would have also been nice to include a stock dyno and times just for comparison (with the necessary disclaimers indicating it's not a perfect comparison).

I read the SportZ article and I am very impressed with the JWT kit. I am definitely without a doubt going with that kit when it's released. I really like the way the 3 drivers said this kit is oem like and if Nissan had made a twin turbo for the car this would be the kit that it would be like. Also, the torque curve comes on so early from what I can see of their dyno charts. So it will throw you in the backseat. I'm not looking to build my engine and go to really high horse power which no longer makes it streetable, so this kit is perfect for my needs. I've heard that some of the other kits make the cars idle rough but supposedly the JWT runs exactly like stock except for a lot more power, according to the mag.

Sorry, but I'm not buying the dyno sheet on the Vortec unit. There's no way a properly tuned Vortec S/C is making...

330rwhp at 4200 rpms
260rwhp at 4600 rpms
330rwhp at 5200 rpms
270rwhp at 5600 rpms
350rwhp at 5900 rpms
260rwhp at 6100 rpms
320rwhp at 6300 rpms

The darn blower is speeding up with increased rpm's so the hp should always be increasing up to the magical 5250 rpms, not jumping around by 60-70rwhp!!! I wonder why the Stillen S/C is made to look the best when Stillen is hosting the event? Coincidence???

Vortec

I've found it's usually best to read an article before discrediting its content or making unsubstantiated statements. Of course that's just my subjective opinion.

Here are two parapharased excerpts from the article along with my personal comments in brackets.

1) ... Stillen was gracious enough to let us use and operate their dyno. [In fact Steve Millen insisted on an independent dyno operator.]

2) ... on all dyno runs the Vortech's torque curve was strangely cut off... like the ECU was trying to avoid detonation. [This Vortech car definitely didn't like 91 octane Kalifornia designer gas.]

[A final comment. Much has been learned about tuning FI since early 2004. An excellent example is the featured G35 in the Summer 2005 Issue of Sport Z Magazine - www.SportZMagazine.com -]

...and my subjective opinion (of my post above) is that I took the information I was given and drew my own conclusions based upon all of the available facts presented at the link you provided. If there are "other facts" presented in your article but the article is not provided at your link... does this mean that no one can/should comment until they pay you to read a 2 year old backordered magazine?

If you wanted other statements, such as the ones you outlined, to be known then maybe the whole article should have been made available at the link you provided... Just a thought.

BTW I have been planning on subscribing to your magazine for quite some time. Maybe I'll just have to pull the trigger today so that I'll be allowed to make comments about your future posts...

Neff, while you're pulling the trigger, send me your copy and I'll sign it for you! Give DaveO a break. He's very well versed in everything VQ and only gives it the way it is. He has nothing to gain from mentioning the performance dif between manufacturer...especially since most of them advertise in his magazine!

Thumbs up Hey, Dave!

Dave - Thanks for the excellent "how-to" article on changing the plugs on the VQ. I'd been meaning to do that to check them after a few bottles of nitrous ran across them but had been too lazy to do so. Your article encouraged me so thanks again!
One suggestion about the magazine - is there any way to either enlarge the size of the dyno graphs or at least make them a little easier to read? Perhaps a more contrasting pen color or larger font size would help those of us with "middle-aged" eyes!! I remember U putting the originals from the S/C shootout on this website so surely it's not the first time that this has been mentioned. I found the T/T dyno graphs equally difficult to follow. Otherwise, keep up the fine work!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Well said Gene. Some of my recommedations for improvements are in line with your thoughts. By the way, you have email.
