Question Transmission whine - please help

All of a sudden once I hit 3000 miles on my 2006 coupe 6MT I started to hear a whining noise. I thought that I was being picky and that it wouldn't bother me, but now it's starting to get on my nerves. Here is my best description of the sound.

It sounds like a supercharger whining. The whine starts around 1,800 RPM and stays until about 4,600 RPM where I think the sound of the engine drowns it out. It happens with engine hot or cold. Does it with outside temperature hot or cold. Only does it under partial throttle in first and second and very faintly in third. As I accelerate the noise of the whining sounds speeds up. Does NOT make the sound coasting with the clutch pedal pressed in. Does NOT make the sounds when it is neutral and costing. Does NOT make the sounds if i rev the engine up when in neutral. Only happens when I am in a gear and under partial/normal acceleration. Under WOT I dont hear it but this might be because the exhaust drowns it out. It believe it is coming from the tranny.

Is this normal for our cars to make a bit of gear whine?

I know exactly what you are talking about. I bought my 2003 coupe in May and it had that same whine. I was told it was normal by the dealership, so I didnt worry about it since I have a lot of warranty left. I actually thought it sounded kind of cool.

Well since then, I noticed 3rd and 5th gear starting to grind. Of course the dealer couldn't replicate the problem - until recently. About a week ago, I got a new transmission AND clutch installed under warranty. The new tranny has NO whine at all. It drives real nice too.

So maybe the whine is an early sign of the tranny going bad? As long as you are under warranty, you should be good to go though.

I have the factory stereo. I haven't done anything to the car in the way of mods. I am going to have te dealer check it out when I get an oil chage at 3750 so they will have a running report of the problem. Maybe I will get a new tranny out of it, but i am kinda pissed that it is starting to have problems with so few miles. I expect better quality out of a 40k car.

I have the same on my 2003, and I think it sounds cool too LOL.

No problems with shifting/gears yet though... 44K and counting.

Did you buy your car new or used? I've had mine car since late Nov '03 and no whine ever. I recently got the tranny swapped due to grinding into 5th gear and now I have an annoying whine. It does seem to drive better though. Although it's even harder to shift into 5th and 6th now. I wish the swap would have resulted in getting the smoother shifting found in the '05 and '06 cars.

I bought the car used in May of '06. It had the whining from the first time I test drove it too.

Since I got my transmission replaced, 6th has been a little tighter to get into. Reverse is even worse. However as the days pass, it seems like its loosening up a bit. I like the way it drives and shifts much better though. I can definitely tell a difference.

I bought the car new in June 2006. I got the car when it had 8 mile on it. It never used to whine until i hit 3000 miles. Kinda weird.

6MT Coupe
06 mt here. Built 10/2005.
Mine too around the same mileage.
Not too worried about it. Haha, it does sound like a SC whine. Kinnda makes me wanna get one, haha.
If it gets worse or starts having shifting problems like said previously, I'm covered with warranty, so I'm not stress'in.
At least you don't have the oil consumtion thing too, like me and some others.
Dang...think my engine and tranny were built on a Monday.
