how important is it to get your tranny flushed?

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while, just been lurkin' alot...

I am well past my 36000 mile service date - i'm at 50,000 now...and I didnt do the "recommended" thing and took in for service at 36000. I do do oil changes tho at the least

I am about to put my snow tires on for the winter and i'm thinking about taking to dealer to get my transmission flushed....seemed like that was the main thing to have done at 36,000 mile service... Is it real important to do that? or can I just go on with just doing oil changes? I havent really done any major service like that just wanted to make sure its worth my while to have the dealer do it...

The other reason im considering having dealer do it is cuz my radio SUCKS. it skips brand new CD's until my car warms up and even then it still skips them sometimes. I think its because its just cold or something because I'll heat up my cd, put it in and it works for a second then starts skipping, i pull it out and it feels like ICE... once the cd player warms up, everything is good...I hope its still under warranty....

Do they do a flush? I think they just do a drain and fill. They are two different things.

im at almost 42000 miles and i havent done it yet its been on my mind for a while now, i called the dealership they said that they recommend that it is done but it does not have to be performed, but i have noticed that sometimes in the rain my transmission vibrates on my shifter(5AT), and now it is doing it sometimes in the dry i thought it was because it might have been my driveshaft hitting my exhaust but there is at least 3-4 inches of clearence, so i dont know, wondering if you or anyone else is having that problem, as far as for the CD player mine was doing the same thing and i took it to the dealer and they ordered me a new cd player , should be here this week, hope that helps

Think of it like changing your oil at 3,000 miles. If you drive hard then it might help but 5,000 is realistic for alot of people. The science says you can stretch it out to 7,500 or perhaps even 10,000 - that's on dino engine oil in a generic car.

So it's nice to change your trans fluid every 30k. 50k is realistic. If you go 75k or 100k its not likely to fail - provided you drive like my mom. With that said, I like to alternate flush vs. drain/re-fill every 30k.

thanks guys, yeah that' helps.. i think i'l just opt for that..mabe i'll have em top off my engine coolant..

i'm gonna call and find out about the radio.. i would hope it still under warranty..

I'm not sure about the car vibrating scarface. Mine doesnt do that... is it maybe due to unbalanced wheels? is the shifter the only thing that vibrates? I'm not sure, maybe it does have something to do with tranny.. but i'm not 100% sure ... maybe just tell dealer the symptoms and see what they say.

I'm changing mine tomorrow. I've been wanting to do it since around 30K. I have 48K right now. I'm curious to see if it affects shifting. Can't be a bad thing though.

Guys it would not hurt to get your rear diff oil changed as well. I got a tranny flush at 35,000 along with a diff service. I am going to do the same when I hit around 65,000. Most dealerships do a full flush and our cars take synthetic tranny fluid so if you decide to get it done at a mom and pop shop make sure it's synthetic tranny fluid thats put back in or you can kiss your trans goodbye.
Hope this helps!!!

It's about $140 to do the full fluid exchange on the tranny at the dealer. If you like your 70000 mile powertrain warrantee, I would advise doing the service. Paying out of pocket for a trans rebuild would be unpleasant. $140 is cheap insurance every 2 years or so. Also, I would not have anybody except the dealer or a trusted family mechanic do the service as they MUST use the Nissan Matic-J fluid. Anything else has the wrong friction characteristics and will void the warrantee.

My dealer didn't have the equipment for the AT flush. Just the drain/refill.
