Question oil filter - what the service dept guy said & your thoughts?

I stopped by my local dealer today to pick up a crush washer so I can replace it when I change my oil this weekend.

The guy behind the parts desk was confused that I didn't want the filter too. He asked "where are you getting your filter?"
I told him Advanced Auto parts and using the Purolator filter which is used by many people.
He proceeds to tell me that I should listen to the car when it first starts and I will probably hear some valve tapping. He said that this is because of a special designed valve the Nissan filters have which keep the oil from draining back down. And when the Nissan filter is used this wont happen. Of course he also stated that if anything happened to my engine Infiniti could deny warranty coverage since I wasnt using the Nissan filter. That I know already is complete nonsense and Im thinking the rest of the story was too.

I have researched the oil filter thing before and have been using the Purolator PureOne PL14610. From the internals that I've seen of both filters I don't believe there are any special valves in the Nissan filter anyway.
Is it even possible for that tiny filter to have any affect on the oil settling to the bottom?? It doesn't seem logical.

I have heard slight valve tapping in the past but this may have even been when the car had a Nissan filter. This is the only reason I havent forgotten about his story completely already.

What are your thoughts on this?

My thought is your service adviser is a numbnutz that doesn't know about aftermarket filter design. What he is referring to is the anti-drainback valve that most oil fiters have in one form or another. The Purolator is a fine filter and is perfectly fine for your engine.

Dealer is clueless. Infiniti warranty doesn't say you have to use a Nissan brand oil filter. (Though it does say you have to use Nissan brand Automatic Tranny Fluid)

he's talking about a check valve. A check valve lets oil drain out of the filter gradually, where as some filters don't and the oil will just drain back into the motor.

The Purolator Pure One is actually a very highly rated oil filter, not just for our cars but in general. Go to www.Bobistheoilguy.com (ok sickos, it's not THAT kind of website) and check out the oil filter area and you'll find people who's cut open different brands of filters and compared and contrasted the different brands. The conclusion is that the Pure One is a high quality filter, and probably of higher quality compared to the Nissan OEM.

Dunno about the mouth breather at your dealership, but I've used OEM for almost 30 years on this car and countless others and have never had an oil related problem.

In fact, I've been blessed, I've never really had a car that had mechanical problems at all.

Maybe that's because I follow the service manual and then some, who knows?

That pretty well sums up my experience. I chalk it up to 99% care and good maintenance, and 1% luck....

I have used the odd non-Nissan brand oil filter without any trouble..., and the owners manual says under certain conditions that non OEM parts can be used provided they meet the manufacturer's specs.

I have to say, tho, that despite what we know about using non-OEM oil filters, that if my dealer suggested OEM filter use, I'd concede figuring I'd like him on my side it there's any kind of 'dispute'.
Just a thought..

C.

More BS from the "Stealership."...............

Ya gotta wonder where these people come from. Somewhere in our country
is a retard farm that trains people to work at dealerships to spout BS on
subjects they know nothing about......over and over and over!

The only valve built in to MOST filters is a BY PASS valve. If the filter becomes clogged (God knows how long you would have to wait for that), it lets oill bypass the filter.

Those oem filters that he is defending have proven to be sub par compared to other some other brands. Click below for the information that backs this statement up on 6mt.net.

Well one thing to remember that the grease monkey behind the counter can tell the average consumer BS and they will believe it. For those of us that work on cars and have some understanding of aftermarket parts we know that most of the guys behind the counter are full of ****.

Keep using what you are using and if there is a problem, let Infiniti prove to you that your aftermarket filter failed.

We like to go "the extra mile" when it comes to taking care of our cars. However, I have come to the conclusion that you can use the cheapest crap out there, and as long as you change it ever 3K, you car will do fine. I have seen it. I have over a million miles in company cars and trucks, we used what ever was "bulk" 10W30 or 5W30 and my last pick up had over 300,000 miles on it and NEVER had an oil related problem.
