one or more of the sensors could be damaged

There are several things that can cause the light on the dash to come on. The ones I can think of are:

1. Low tire pressure
2. Bad sensor
3. You might not have sensors (they might not fit on the rims you have).

If the pressure on one or more of your tires is low, there will be a very loud, annoying beep for like 10 seconds when the car determines the pressure is low. If you are not getting a very long, annoying beep, the system is not warning of low tire pressure.

If you are getting the light without the long annoying beep, that probably means the system is not working, and will not tell you when your pressure is low.

I only know one way to tell if you actually have the tire pressure sensors installed on the rims - have a shop tell you. They may have to take a tire off to find out (then again, they may not).
