Oil Burning issue ongoing

I have had an issue with my 04 coupe burning an unusual amount of oil and have had it into the dealership 2 seperate times now for their "oil consumption test" and both times my car does not repeat the same oil burning as i have seen before. I am thinking they are filling my car with non-synthetic oil in their tests and I myself use full synthetic with every change and that might be why the results differ. Now by burning oil I mean both times I went to change my oil after about 3500 miles and found about 1 quart left in the pan. Now my question is, does my using synthetic oil affect how much oil passes through the rings? Is non-syntheitc oil less likely to burn up and pass through the piston rings?

1st of all what weight are you using? But in general synthetics are more uniform in size so of the hole that's letting the oil out is bigger than the syn molecule size then it's going to be used up more. Dino oil seems to be much less uniform so only the smaller sized molecules get by.

Does it hurt to switch back to non-synthetic if running full synthetic burns up too quickly?

I too had an issue with oil consumption. I have an '05 Coupe 6mt w/22xxx miles. Brought the car in for a regular oil change at about 2800 miles since the last oil change which was also done at the dealer. Tech says car has less than a qt of oil in the pan. My wife happened to be the one to take the car in that day since she works by the dealer. I'm like wtf is going on. So now I'm in the middle of an oil consumption test and magically it isn't showing signs of burning oil for the last 2000 miles. My service advisor told my wife that no damage had been done but I know that is bs. How can a car burn oil at a rate of almost 2qts per thousand miles and now magically its burning about a 1/4 qt per thousand miles. I don't believe the dealer. I have had some servos replaced since my initial problem has anyone had that repair done?

I too have started down the oil consumption road - "disappearing oil " post Wed.
It finally dawned on me after reading a few of the NUMEROUS oil consumption threads that my consumption started when I switched from 10W 30 to 5W 30 weight oil (Mobil 1 full synthetic). I am now going through the dealer for oil changes/consumption test.

Interesting. The different "W" specs should in theory only a difference when the oil is cold. As soon as it warms up, they both should be acting like a 30 weight. Unless most of the consuption is occuring during the warm up time. Which I doubt as the engine warms up in a matter of minutes.

I'm wonder if the dealer is putting some seriously thicker oil in there to try to deny claims.

Guys could always bring the oil with them and have

from what the dealer said, during the oil consumpsion test each oil change has to be done by an infiniti tech and they seal up the drain plug each time so that you cant drain the oil out yourself to make it look like your burning oil.

No issues here, but............

Once you start using synthentic oil it's not a good idea to switch back to
good old dino oil. If you want your engine to last stay with synthentic and
use the same grade. Either 5/30 or 10/30. Sorry to hear some of you are
using oil between changes. Has anyone at Infiniti told us what the problem
is when we start using oil......piston rings?
