<-- Stupid Newbie with Questions
Hey all, this may sound like a really stupid question considering the large stickied thread at the top of the page about the oil consumption problems but ill ask anyway at the risk of being flamed horribly.
I currently drive an 03 F-150, I commute 50 miles a day and something about 10 mpg and the stiff ride of a truck has lost its appeal. Ive been looking into a car and ive really been in love with G35s for a while now.
I went and looked at an 04 Coupe the other day at my local dealership and took the obligatory test drive. Talk about satisfaction.. The only thing I could ever see being a problem is the possibility of feeling cramped (im 6'3"). The guy at the dealership said that the Sedan would solve that issue but still has the sporty feel of the coupe. Is there a huge loss of power or general agility, etc from the Coupe to the Sedan?
As I saw from the Oil consumption thread, it seems that the affected models are the 05+ 6MTs - I didnt see any mention of 03s or 04s with the automatic (w/tipptronic) having this issue - Has there been any reported problem?
What do you guys get realistically on the freeway - I mean, i know its no Prius but I definitely expect to see some kind of significant mpg gains from my current $400 a month gas habit.
Thank you all in advance.

Hello WildFoxMedia, and welcom aboard the forum.
There is not much of a difference in performance from the coupe to the sedan. If I'm not mistaken, the coupe is slightly heavier, so your increase in hp is about evened out.
There are little or no complaints regarding oil comsumption problems for the 03-04 model years. That began with the newer version "rev-up" engine design.
Most complaints on these cars are regarding window motors, rear axle click, various squeeks and rattles, some people are not so thrilled with the Bose radios, Some suffer from tire cupping, The 03-04 Auto cars are notorious for brake wear.....pads and rotors....
I think you will find the coupe or the sedan for that matter to be a great car.
As far as gas mileage, your looking around 17-19mpg around town driving, and highway about 22-25mpg. Your mileage may vary....
Good luck with your decision and welcome once again.

I think the gas mileage may be a bit less, you might see a bit less, not 10, but somtimes it could dip down to 15 sometimes... in city driving... but the 22 looks like a good city. I thnk you will see close to 20'ish ...
I think the 1st gen coupe looked a million times better then the sedan, however I think the 2nd gen sedan looks better then the coupe, or about the same.
Thats why the 1st gen sedans have a lower resale value than the coupe.
GL with whatever you do... Great cars!

the 07 sedans are amazing...i know you were looking for the 04 era..but i have to addmit if you drive one of the 07 sedans...you may be sold..i have an 05 coupe tiptronic..(non rev)...procharged..no problems except bose cd player went out...very reliable, and performs extremely well...good luck with your decision!!!
I get poor city mileage (~15-16mpg), but highway I get close to 25mpg.
I would agree with the comment about the '07+ sedans - I've had both an '06 and '07 G35X as a loaner and the '07 is MUCH nicer than the previous generation. It feels faster, sturdier, more quiet, looks nicer inside and out.
If you are going with a 1st gen, I would say that a coupe is the better bet. The oil consumption of '05-'06 6MT coupes is an issue, but it is covered under warranty.
Also, having driven both 5ATs and 6MTs in Gs, I would take the 6MT any day of the week. My '04 6MT feels much, much faster than the 5AT '06 G35x (granted, it's an X) I currently have as my loaner.

The main reason I was looking at the 03-04 range was budget. Looking around locally I see that 03-04s are going for somewhere in the 21k-23k range. I cant see myself spending anymore then 25k which I have a feeling would eliminate most if not all 07s
The highway mileage sounds pretty decent, especially in comparison to my truck.
Also, im not entirely sure that I have to have the 6MT because its faster - Anything will be faster then my truck and sitting in traffic will be more comfortable with a clutch (Call me lazy)

ive had my 06 G coupe a week now and i just finished off my first tank of gas, averaged 17 a gallon and that was beating up on it pretty good for at least half of a tank... gonna take it easy on this tank and see what i can get out of her...
I have a 5AT with light mods. I drive about 40 miles a day to and from work. I'll get about 16-18 MPG. On the weekends, if I'm punchin' it good, I'll get 14MPG or so lol, but that's my fault...
But, if I play my cards and watch my foot and really try to conserve, it goes up to about 20-26..sometimes 28MPG. It's not bad at all, considering the performance of the G!
Never had an oil consumption issue. Been using Mobil 1 synthetic for over a year.
Good luck man.

Well regardless what year or type you buy of a G35, you should definitely be getting better gas mileage when compared to your current truck. If you plan on driving on the highway "most" of the time, you should be able to hit low to mid 20's mpg on average.
