On the throttle hard - rattling/pinging noise?

OK I have a 2004 G35 Coupe and love it, but it seems when I'm getting on the gas I hear a mild knocking (misfire?) type of noise coming from the engine. Is this normal? I read a review of the G37 one time and it mentioned the G37 *didn't* sound like it was making grits (like the G35 did) - was he referring to this noise and therefore they all do it and it's nothing to worry about? Or do I need tuning help? I want to romp the thing but don't want to screw it up.

No, not supposed to hear anything but if you're using junk gas?????
Nothing but the recommended high test octane in my cars.

I tried 89 once in my Murano with the same VQ engine and I got pings. Not worth it, never used it again, just the 92-93 octane stuff for me.

I have seen all types of engine damage from detonation, get it fixed.

I agree with Bob1, if you are using anything lower than 91 octane you can get pinging noises with our engine. If you are using good gas and still hearing those noises I would get it checked out. You're not supposed to hear that.

All I've ever used is 93 octane, so that's not it. Thanks for the responses - I'll get it looked at.

OK, must be something else, maybe electrical/computer timing? Maybe someone can hook up to see if a code spits out of a diagnostics.

Only thing I can say is that I don't have any pings or knocks. Can't say as I heard that as an issue from any other posters.......yet.

Lots of reasons for detonation. Here's a few...
Dirty MAF, clean and reset ECU.
Air leak in air intake system after MAF = lean mix = more heat = ping.
Bargin basement fuel, yes even high oct bargin fuel. Those lack cleaners to keep CC internals clean.
Oil consumption issues.

Can you explain what the MAF is? And how to clean it and reset the ECU?

If yours is like mine it's pretty subtle; not like loud knocking. I'm thinking many wouldn't even notice it.
