Ok, here is the dilemma. I currently own an 05 IP g35 coupe with 23000 miles. My aunt owns an 07 BMW 535xi. Her lease is up in about a year and a half. She only puts about about 5000 miles a year on it. As such, when her lease is up she'll have about 20,000 miles on it. She offered me this: When her lease is up, I would sell my G for whatever it would be worth at that time. She will then sell me the BMW (off lease is cheaper) and will even pay the difference. AKA suppose the G sells for 20 something grand and the BMW will be 40grand, she'll pay the extra 20 or whatever so that I may have the BMW.


Now i you may say, 'are you crazy bro, never look a gift horse in the mouth...its a bmw etc etc, youre crazy etc etc' BUT i absolutely love my G coupe. I dunno, I'm trying to make a decision. What would you guys do? Keep the G and politely say thank you for the offer but no thank you? Or hell yes I'll take the BMW thank you for years to come. lol. What you think?

Maybe if it was an M5. I would keep the G. Not to mention since the 5 Series is so heavy, its handling is signifcantly less than the G.

Take your aunt's offer and buy her BMW at a discount. Then sell the BMW a few months later, then use the extra cash to buy another G coupe.

 

In a year and a half i don't know if you can sell your G for 20 something Grand.

I wouldn't do this for two reasons:

1. You love your car- good enough reason to keep it in my book

2. This is your Aunt. As a rule for myself, I NEVER do business with close friends or family. There is too much of a chance of someone getting pissed off. Personally, I would feel as if the car never really can be mine. I doubt that she'll ever forget that she gave you the car at a significant discount either. If you two were to ever get in a disagreement about something, its far too easy for her to say something along the lines of "well I gave you my BMW" or "you owe me 20 grand". In all likelihood, this wont happen, but it could, and if it does, no car will be worth the trouble. My family and friends matter too much for me to deal with them.

It is always more fun when you get to enjoy toys that your hard work paid for; having something passed as a 'gift' never bring the same kind of joy IMHO.

Assuming it's the sedan, I think I'd take the 535xi. I wouldn't if you're talking about the wagon.

I'd have to do a little more research and test drive the BMW but it sounds like your aunt is offering you an opportunity to essentially trade out your car for one of significantly greater blue book value, that's 2 years newer, with about 60% of the miles, is all wheel drive, and still considered a very respectable sports sedan.

I wouldn't consider it for a 525/528 etc. But I'd have to give it some serious thought once you got up into the 535 area, and then throw in the fact that it's an X. Sounds like quite an opportunity.

I say take the offer unless there's something substantial that I don't know about the 535xi.

 

That is a good deal, but I am with you, I love my G. But, if you do take the offer, I would also get an extended warranty because the cost to maintain and repair a BMW after warranty is up is a lot of mula.
