Potential G purchase... need help! Possible problem?
Hey everyone, I currently own a 06 coupe and I love it.
One of my good buddies is about to purchase one himself and I have been helping him with the process. He has found one he likes
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/ctd/1022318682.html
Here is the problem.. and yes I have searched a overheating issue and havn't come up with much.
He test drives this G.. drives it all over, sometimes getting it up between 80-90 on the highway to play around... drives it back and right as he is pulling into the lot either the check engine or service engine light comes on. This makes him a little wary of the purchase. The next day this dealer call him and says that problem is fixed, and he thinks he mentioned something about it overheating.
Keep in mind, this isn't an Infiniti dealership. We are going tomorrow to look at it again and I am going to take a personal look to see if I can see anything out of the ordinary.
Apparently this car was wholesaled from Infiniti to this place.
First thoughts that cross my mind.
- I read somewhere that there was a recall on the radiator cap, could this possibly be causing this problem letting air bubbles in?
- Being a 2004 could this possibly be a cracked or lose hose or even the potential of a cracked radiator?
-Can you take the VIN number down and call Infiniti to check for past service problems/history?
-Being wholesaled from Infiniti, does this sound weird to anyone? It seems like a nice black G with low miles would be in demand....
-Does this sound like a car that has a head gasket problem and has been passed around not ever being fixed?
Any input from people would be helpful.. I am interested to hear what you all have to say.

Overheating could be as simple as having a bad thermostat (though I don't think that would make the MIL come on). I suggest taking the car out again and hoping the MIL lights up again so you can go have the code read. The dealer likely just cleared the code and hopes to sell the car before it comes on again, or there was no code due to it being a temporary problem that went away.
A steady MIL indicates a minor problem while a flashing MIL indicates a major problem. I don't think a steady MIL is anything to be worried about. It doesn't indicate engine failure or anything like that.
When I bought my G from an auction the MIL was lit and I didn't get the code read before buying it. I can't remember what the problem was, but it cost about $100 to fix and I got the car for about $5000 cheaper because nobody else wanted to bid on a car with the MIL on.
Going by what I see around here, the price on that G isn't terrific. If it is a really good price for Gs in your area then maybe it's worth the small risk to save a few thousand dollars on this car. I'm sure your friend can use the MIL as a negotiation strategy by telling the dealer that most people will shy away from any car that flashes warnings at them.

being that's it at 55k miles...I would check to see if the tires are still good, air pressure too. Also check the brake fluid level, if it's low...the brake pads are close to done. I've had a check engine light pop on me once...for either one of those two things, i never figured it out because i replaced the tires and brakes at the same time.
As far as overheating, i have no guess but the thermostat or water pump. I don't usually hear of overheating problems with G's especially with that amount of miles though. You could check the coolant reservoir. G/L

Update:
My friend bought the car. I drove it also, I loved it.
Apparently the overheat comment was a misinterpretation... this russian girl with bad english was speaking of the heated seats.
Not sure what the light coming on was about but it didn't seem to affect anything and it ran great.
I will make him join the forums shortly
