conserving battery power while car undriven
hi, i'm wondering how i can conserve the battery power of my sedan, all i can think of is pulling the clock fuse, i'm going away for 5 weeks i know battery won't last 5 weeks but i might have someone come in every 2 to get it started, i don't want to drain the battery as I read many posts about the consequences, car acting funny etc, i want to keep the alarm on, is there any other fuse i could pull besides the clock so it drains as little power as possible? thanks
You didn't say whether you are storing inside (with access to electricity) or outside.
Inside: Go to Wally World and get the $20 Schumacher "Battery Companion" float charger. It can be left on INDEFINATELY (I have had one on a SLA battery for over 2 years now) and will "charge" then keep a 13.8 volt "float charge" on it forever. Your battery will not "sulphate" and you will be able to fire it right up when you get back. It will also supply enough amps for you to leave the alarm on.
Outside: find a small solar panel (5-10 watts) that is REGULATED to 13.8 volts max to clip to the battery. You can't use the cigarette lighter plug because it goes off when the ignition is turned off. It will keep you battery up just fine.
PS: Remember to fill the tank (to prevent condensation) and put some "Stabil" gas stabilizer in the tank at the recommended rate for up to 2 years storage. Drain and fill the oil just before you store it. Check the coolant for proper mix and if it's more than a year old replace it.
