Truth is, it used to mean that a while back, but now since all of them are, it doesn't mean much. Its more of a habit. I'd imagine that at some point, not all Bimmers were fuel injected.

Think of the 328 and 335 now. At some point it would have meant 2.8L and 3.5L engines respectively, but now that they're the same engines (one turbo'd one not), they have different designations.
