Help! Gas gauge not reading correctly
Help! Gas gauge not reading correctly
I've been having an issue lately with my 2004 G35 SC gas gauge. Seems it reads gas unreliably, often telling me there is less gas then there actually is in the car. The dealer says the cluster is not ohming (?) correctly and that I need a new cluster (all the gauges on the dashboard). I'm not believing that. I think there's a simpler explanation... any ideas...? I've seen something on this thread about dirty sending units..... how can I try to clean those to see if it fixes the problem...
you'll gain acces to the fuel sending units thru your backseats.. there are 2 sending units... the left ( if you are standing from the back of the car) is easy to pull out from the gas tank... the right one is a PITA as it also has the fuel pump.. you won't be able to take it out.. you can clean it with q-tips.. i did mine 2 years ago and never had any problem since.. but if your'e still on warranty, just take it to the dealer.. goodluck
Anyone with the slightest amount of common sense wouldn't take there G to the Stealership unless it's covered by your warranty. I had the same issue with my gas gauge, would never read full even though the gas was full to the edge of the filler pipe. Added a can of Red Line Injector cleaner with the tank less than half full a couple times, now she reads full when it is....Gary
I am having the same issue. Like Av8or said, I got access to my fuel tank and tried to clean the device. I filled her up and it read full! Now its worse than ever and only reads a half tank. I wouldnt really recommend this procedure just because of the amount of gas that could possibly get in your car.

How does this procedure work? I am curious to know! Looking to fix the same problem!

i had an 03 maxima with the same problem replace fuel sendung with a new oem unit from dealer and nothing ended up being the actual gauge. but a brand new cluster and voila gas gauge worked fine. now with my g im having the same goin to the cleaning in injector cleaning to see it helps
Adding Red Line injector cleaner to the gas tank every six months will keep the additive crud away from the fuel pump/float and give us more accurate readings....works for me!

I own a 2007 Infiniti G35 sedan when I Bought it the gas Gauge always read inaccurately and one day the needle just quit moving so I decided to remove the 2 sending units and clean them with alcohol and the needle started moving again but it was still kinda inaccurate so I decided to replace the sending unit and it seemed to be working fine until one day I was driving and my car just shut off on the high way turned out it had no Gas in it and the gague was still reading half a tank so I got fed up and I replaced the sending unit again and it was still kinda inaccurate I decided I would just live with it until last week I was driving right after filling it up and the needle just dropped to E and a message on my Gaugle cluster saying RANGE 0 miles, so I decided I would replace the sending unit again but with a used OEM unit this time and still the needle stays at E no matter what and and the message on the dash still says Range 0 Miles. anyone know what it could be ? could it be a bad Gauge Cluster.
On my car and a lot of other peoples’ cars the cluster would get messed up and show an inaccurate fuel level. If your mileage tange indication gets its reading from the cluster, then thats most likely your issue. But if the range indication gets its signal from somewhere else, then you probably have something else thats faulty and sending an inaccurate signal. Wait for our member Cleric to chime in….Im sure he will have your answer.
There's steps in the FSM to use a digital multimeter to actually see what the sending units are telling the instrument cluster.
Short version, unplug the main harness on the pump/float, pins 2 and 5 are the float arm, move the float from bottom to top, range should scale from 4-80 ohms. Next unplug the sub-pump/float (the one that's just a float arm with no pump), it's a 2 wire harness, across pins 1 and 2 it should read 4-40 ohms as you swing the float from bottom to top.
That way you know for sure the floats are both sending the correct signal, if they are then the issue is the instrument cluster.
It's all in section DI - Driver Information in the FSM.

Solved at last
After years of dealing with this dreaded fuel gauge issue and countless parts replacements, I decided to take another look and I'm so glad I did. Fixing a module that acts as a communication between the Fuel Pump/Floats & the Instrument Cluster is what did it for me. I've never been so excited seeing my low fuel warning light again!...lol
