Need some advice about taillights - please help

Hey guys, I am pretty new to this forum and bought a mostly stock 6mt coupe about a month ago.

The guy I bought it from "blacked out" the rear taillights. Image below(car and lights OFF):

I am not a big fan of how these look when it is sunny outside or my lights are off.

Here is an image of the same lights when the headlights are turned on and it is dark outside, I think this looks great:

What I want is overlays for these lights that make them look DARK, but not "murdered out" like in the 1st image. Can these tinted taillights be UNDONE and replaced with Bluebats? Or am I out of luck?

I am looking for my car to look like this, even with HEADLIGHTS OFF( i am 99% sure this image is with headlights off but not positive):

I am guessing Bluebat GTR style 6/10 overlays would be my best bet, but I was wondering how they look with the lights both off and on.

Please advise: sorry for the wall of text.

you could try some acetone to remove the paint. If it doesn't come off, you're out of luck.

Was the tail tint sprayed, or were overlays used?

I believe overlays can be removed, but I've never done that so I couldn't tell you how difficult it would be. If they were sprayed, you'd have to wet sand, buff, and polish the hell out of them.

Taking overlays off isn't bad, I've seen it done. I was assuming the OP's ones are painted.

you can still try acetone and rub the tint off.

No worries OP, you still have plenty of options.

-DIY wet sand, buff, polish.
-Find a shop that does tint spray and ask them if they can restore the light for you.
-Sell the tinted tails on diver or ebay, and buy new/used tails.
-Post to trade your tinted tails for OEM tails.

I don't know what acetone would do to the plastic. It might eat it up, which means you would still have to go back and wet sand (I would suggest escalating from 1000, to 1500, to 2000 grit), buff with cutting compound, and polish with something like PlastX. This is the process I've used to restore my headlight lenses after they became hazy and scratched. I'm confident it would work for the tails in this case as well.

You have a palm sander?

Sand with 220, you're gonna go through the better half of a roll as this **** is thick and gummy.

Sand it off, then go to 600 or 800, then go to 1200- then anywhere upwards from 2000, keep going until they are start clearing and then get the buffer out and polish them back to beauty.

THEN, order bats overlays and put them on.

Or trade them to someone who wants tinted tails.

i know it sounds obvious

if you plan on using acetone or whatever

make sure you take your lights out first...

Its hard to tell but if they've been clear coated you're gonna have to sand it down, if not paint thinner will strip off the tint then give them a good polishing with rubbing compound then plastx.

Good info. Sounds like you've done this before... and it sucked. Am I right?

If it's that much work, I rescind sand/buff/polish from my list of suggestions, lol.

Sell or trade FTW.
