Proper Break In

Our VQ's have a known problem for consuming oil, due to piston rings not sealing properly. In our car manuals, we are told to do an "easy break in" I think the reason why our motors consume oil is because of the break in process, which is very crucial. This is an old article, but it can be pretty helpful for those who haven't seen it yet.http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I could be wrong, but tell me what you guys think

I have read several things about this. I do believe what that article is telling you. Machine work is far superior to what it used to be, and I do not see the need for a slow break-in process.

I am not abusive where I over rev the guts out of a new engine, but I break it in like i am going to drive it.

I have to totally agree with that info you posted.

Do you think that the break in process could be the reason why some rev ups consume oil? For example, those who did the hard break in are the ones without OC because their piston rings sealed properly and the ones who did the easy break in consume oil.

i think the best way to break in a motor...esp a built one....is to beat on it. dont kill it with redlines from the beginning, but drive it like you normally do....spirited same thing with my bike motor when i had it put back together....went straight on the dyno.

and the new cars we get at the dealership have like a couple miles....we drive the **** outta them when we gas them up and test drive them for atleast 10 miles.

Kuneff, do you own a RevUp? If so, did you have any problems with OC? I'm asking because of the break in method you use. I think the easy break in method may be the cause of oil consumption.

No, both my G coupes were used and Non-Rev up.

I Broke my new stuff in with the Drive it Like you Hate it thoughts... Mustang engines, new Motorcycles, and so forth....

On the Mustang engines... I would start it up, let it run till it was warmed up and at operating temp. shut it down. Check torque on a few things, check fluids... then it was time for a nasty burnout...

My engine failures were not even remotely related to break in process.... Oil pump bolt did not get thread locker, gas pedal stuck under mat and over reved, baffle plates were not in place... just dumb bad luck....

my First brand new anything.... 2001 Ducati 748S... at 40 miles I was rolling on it at full throttle... at 67 miles it was on the back wheel banging gears... That bike ran better than a 750 in line 4. I honestly felt it ran better than my friends 996 that went through the perfect book recommended break in period.

When I drove SLICK home from Glendale Infiniti I was on the freeway driving normal 65/70 MPH. Changed oil to Mobil1 synthetic at 900 miles and I've never used a drop between changes. Went from using Mobil1 to Red Line and finally woke up now I use nothing but AMSOIL along with K&N filters.

After I got my motor replaced due to the OC TSB, I did a progressive break- in. Pretty easy on it the first 1,500mi. Nothing over 4k rpm and never full throttle. After 1,500mi then I would take it up to 6k rpm. Got the oil changed at 3,000mi. Used the Nissan blend. After the change I would go WOT bit not all the way to redline. After 1,500 more miles of that then I would finally go WOT to redline. At 6k miles changed the oil and this time I used Mobile 1 full synthetic and it has not burned a drop of oil since. Motor runs great and I just did a spark plug change at 30k on the motor and there were no signs of oil burn-off or anything abnormal on the plugs.

Props for being able to do that. I could NEVER be that patient.

It was not easy, but the motor did get replaced in December two years ago so the weather conditions did make it a little more tolerable.

I suppose but I still don't think I could do it. Every once in a while I have to run through the gears. Probably ever 200 miles or so, other than that I can drive like a granny haha
