Dealership RFID tracking tag
Dealership RFID tracking tag
Anyone else getting these from their dealer? Few weeks ago I was cleaning the interior of my G coupe and ran across an Alien x964 RFID tag stuck to the top of my rearview. Exact same one as in this lexus thread (I have no pics b/c I destroyed mine
)
Little googling shows a partnership between alien, mydealerlot.com, and dealerships for sticking these things on client's cars when they come in for service. I had recently been in for service so I called the dealer and guy had no clue. Called me back 2 mins later saying yes, it was theirs, and they use it to identify me and autofire off a message to my "preferred consultant" (whomever that is) letting them know i'm there. Very emphatic that they were not tracking my whereabouts (guess they've had other calls from the tinfoil hat brigade).
I know a thing or two about RFID and am not concerned with anyone tracking my whereabouts (way too complicated/expensive with a simple RFID tag, cheaper options exist
), and I could, and did, simply remove it, but I'm more concerned with the fact no one told me it was put on. Tell me you're putting it on, what info is on it, and how you use it; then it's up to me to decide if i want to leave it on there or not.
Right now I just plan to remove the tag every time and either destroy it or put it somewhere else until i go back in. Anyone else notice these things after recent dealer trips?

i work at one and there was talk about doing it but we let everyone know about it. the tag would be right on the windshield in plain sight. our's also would have to be scanned by the ipads we plan to get and only can be viewed by us with a password. i do think however it would be very poorly secured.
Oh yeah, I'm not expecting any encryption, but i'm not expecting them to put my name, address, etc on it either. Just something like Customer 234329 that goes and hits the local database to look me up. Guess I need to go borrow an RFID reader and just see what's on it.
But yeah, it's the not telling me thing that gets me.
