Excessive gas consumption?

I saw a thread similar to this one but cant seem to find it anymore....

I recently have been noticing a dramatic increase in gas consumption in my G. Now i never really monitered the gas consumption in it before or since ive bought it for that matter, i just knew it was horrible.

More recently, i conducted a little test because it was getting ridiculous. I filled up with premium gas (93, which ive been putting in since i bought it) and drove my normal commute 5 days a week. After about 10 miles, i put the trip computer on and left it for the week.... by the end of the week, i hit the gas light and i was only up to 220 some miles...... mind you 75% of my commute is highway, i dont dog my car, and there is no noticeable leakage or burning detected...Now its already known that my gas sensor is off and yes, sometimes its off by more than an 1/8th tank, but still, 220 seems very low. Add 10 miles from original fill up...and mayeb another 15 miles for the rest of the tank and thats still only 245.

Is this normal? Anybody else getting this kinda mileage??

Next time actually calculate your mileage...

Miles driven/gallons of gas put in your car.

When the gas light comes on in my car I have about 4 gallons of gas left in there.

Given your 220 miles/ 16 gallons = about 14mpg. If you do 75% of highway that is pretty bad.

A lot of variables can determine gas mileage.
Maintenance up to date?
Tires Inflated properly?
Driving Style
How you actually calculate your mileage.

My advice would be to actually calculate it and see what you come up with. Fill to the top, drive, then fill to the top again and calculate.

I've been getting 20-21 mixed, 24 highway at 75mph. Not really that great, but that is what the sticker states... Also, follow Songle6MT's procedure on calculating mileage

Assuming your cars maintenance is up to date, make sure your tires are at 32-35 psi when cold, don't jack rabbit off the lights. Winter fuels also take a large chunk of mileage from a car, I have the same problem on my G, mostly due to my stock 17's compared to my Ray's 19's. My mileage is down about 20% but I'm not down to 14 mpg, I'm still in the lower 20's since I'm mostly (85-90%) highway.

Omar, there are several members that have complained about their gas mileage. Try a SEARCH using subject Gas Mileage for more answers. Don't guess at what your mileage is, do the math. The window stickers on cars estimating the gas mileage formula is set by our government, when did they ever get anything correct?

I sometimes call my G "The Jet". Not only because it can take off like one (sort of) but because if I'm going over 100 miles, I might as well pay for a plane ticket with as much gas as she burns.

I average 14-16 mpg in my 07x. While this is absolutely horrible, consider that 90% of my trips are either less than 5 miles round trip or they involve city traffic... or both. I do put my right foot to the floor more than I really should, but not all the dam time.

Even after installing CAI (which bumped my old Accord's mpg considerably) I get 15-16mpg city. The most I have ever gotten out of one tank in this car was about 370 miles, mostly highway, OEM wheels, reasonable throttling. I've NEVER seen 20mpg so far.

I actually tested myself one time by trying to hypermile away a full tank (this is after CAI) and still pulled only 16-17mpg driving mostly in the city. Even when I have my 22s on, I still get nearly the same out of a full tank. However, having the 2's does make me lighten my foot.

thanks for the input everyone..
my car isnt 100% up to date but as far as motor is concererned its pretty solid. Since ive bought my car its been throwing up the tire pressure light but they all have been stable... not sure if its a faulty sensor or they are infact low. Ill be checking the tire pressure along with oil change and trans fluid flush this weekend and see if i can get some change in the mileage.. I also just read up on the faulty gauge reading thread and the fix for it.............. im gonna TRY and attempt it cuz that might be part of the problem.

I was getting Barley 200 miles on a full tank (60%highway -40% city) i bought my car around 98k miles a few months ago and decided to change the spark plugs when I hit 101k miles. Glad I did, now I get much better mpg. The spark plugs were pretty bad an burnt up. When I changed the spark plugs I found some oil where the spark plug goes, cylinder 3 and 6. I think the valev cover might be bad, but I still put the new spark plugs in. Good luck !!
