I use a STI-R which is a stealth install, the antenna looks through the lower grill slats in my bumper, the controls are near my gear stick, and the display is near my speedo. I have a escort Redline above my rear view mirror to the left, and a Valentine 1 to the right of my mirror. I have laser interceptor laser jammers in my front grill. Never gotten a speeding ticket.

Laser is controlled by the FDA, Radar is by the FCC. If you jam radar, its a felony (IIRC), but only certain states have banned laser jammers (this will probably change soon).

I'm not even a big speeder, but it became a hobby, and I enjoy using my lidar guns to help test peoples jammers. It's a lot of fun. We all creep over the speed limit at some points, so why not be protected for when you do?

My STI-R (now discontinued) is the best radar detector I've ever owned. You can get a STI-R Plus (It's a 9500CI without the shifters), and some laser interceptor jammers, but that will cost you a pretty penny. Stealth RDs are expensive. If money is no object, go for that combo. If you can't, get a Redline or a V1, and put it above your mirror, they're hard to see up there, and is a great receiving position. But for laser jammers, get the LI's. The K40 is junk, and the 9500CI shifters are mediocre. Blinders are mediocre as well, but I've tested many jammers, LI is certainly the top.

Do NOT rely on your radar detector to alert you to laser. By the time it goes off, IF it goes off, you're toast. The only defense is a jammer.

I've got an old Bel 965 that's save me it's price many times. I go through a small town every day on my comute where a cop will set a trap for a few days every spring and fall. I "see" him over a mile before he can see me. And I call "BS" on "you can't see laser in time". The staties here in CT only use laser now. I've had my alert go off over the hill. I've come to the conclusion that the beam does bounce off road side objects when the operator is careless enough to think he is invisible.

I run some old Cobra detector that I picked up on eBay about 8 years ago. Works like a charm. I travel to Chicago quite a bit and I know that device has paid for itself at least a dozen times.

To speed or not to speed is an issue of where you are and the conditions. In the neighborhood? Never. There are too many kids and people backing out of driveways. On a limited access highway with proper on/off ramps and a speed limit of 55? ALWAYS!

Also consider that the speed limits have been roughly the same since the 70s. How about those bias ply tires and drum brakes? What airbags and seat-belts? I'm just saying that cars are much safer today and the speed limits are generally too low by about 20-30%.
