Weird problem, car shutting off for a second

Ok so i've never heard of this happening so don't really know what to look for, but for the past month or so my car has randomly just been shutting off for 1-2 seconds then turns back on and everything is fine. Always happens when i am stopped at a light, or in traffic.

The only thing i can think that may be causing this are new spark plugs but i swapped them out a month or so before the first occurrence.

Anyone else experience this? I'm stumped.

Wait, can you clarify? The car shuts down, and then 1-2 seconds later, it comes back on by itself? Does the engine stall when it shuts down? Or does it get to the point where it almost stalls and the revs jump back up? Oh and try cleaning your throttle body.

The whole car dies(at least all electrical shuts off) it happens so fast i honestly haven't been able to tell if the engine shuts off completely or what. It's literally like 1 second.

most likely a dirty throttle body.. next time take a look at the RPM's.. see if it goes near 0.

Here's a link on how to clean it. Try this out before you do anything else. It fixed my rough idle issues + stall on startups.

I doubt the TB or MAF would cut the entire electrical system though. In for updates

I had this happen on an 02 S2000 I had years ago. It turns out that the engine wiring harness was bad. The car had been in a bad accident prior to me getting it, and instead of repairing this correctly, it seems a shop crimped and piggybacked the harness back together. After I had the car for several months, it started doing exactly what you've described. Turns off randomly (loses all power, lights, accessories, etc) for 1-3 seconds and then turns itself back on. Doesn't require a restart or re-turn of the key, it just turns itself back on.

Pretty worrisome, especially in traffic where people expect you to launch instantly and you have to sit for a moment while your car comes back to life. Took the dealer a very long time to figure this out, and after trying to stick me with a ridiculous bill, and some negotiations, they finally put me in a brand new S2000 after a year of problems that peaked with that problem.

Best of luck.

Hmm I did do a wire tuck although like 3 years ago, guess I'll just do a full sweep of the bay and check it all out.

no checkengine light? plug it into a diagnostic and see what happens. Last time this happened to a friend's E500, it was the MAF

My Maxima would do this. It would stall out, and start back up. Turned out to be a cam position sensor on its way out. No code (at first) until the sensor went entirely bad. It would only throw a ghost code until the CPS finally died.

Are you having any issues with hard starting?
