lost key replacement cost

hi guys,

i've recently lost my key fob to my 06 g35 coupe and haven't had the spare key in a while now either. basically meaning i can't drive my car. i contacted a local locksmith and they gave me a quote of $280 to replace the key, labor included. they mentioned something about how they need to order some special part since the car uses a smart or "proximity" key. just wanted to verify whether this information is true and im not getting screwed. also the part i'm confused about is how i was able to start the car with just the spare key, without the fob present. did the spare have some sort of chip it in?

fwiw i live in the south chicago area.

thanks.

Do you have the intelligent key? When I picked up my G almost 4 years ago it only came with 1 key, so I went to a local locksmith to get a spare. They had the intelligent fob in stock and made a copy for $179. $280 with cutting a new key without one to model it from seems reasonable to me.

I'm in the Midwest also so pricing should be relatively comparable. Seems odd that they would need to order something, I would check around to see if someone has one in stock.

Just trying to understand your situation. You have a key that will start and drive the car?
