Buzz word for 2005...."tune"
Anyone else notice the excessive use of the word "tune" lately? In most cases, it seems to be used almost exclusively by the automotive ignorant and F-n-F crowd. How many times have you read the following statement:
Do most of these guys even know what a tune is? Do they understand that on most late model cars there's not much you can "tune" without the help of a dealership consult tool, stand alone ECU, or other ECU management device? Are they talking about timing? A/F ratios? Do they even know?
Just an observation.
...I got my car dynoed today and it's a little low on power, but with a tune, it will haul.
"...dude, with a *insert any mod here* and a tune, you'll be flying."
"..yeah, I got beat, but if I got my car tuned, I would have put 10 cars on you".
Just an observation.
Honestly it depends. The Series II 3800 aftermarket has an "on the fly" tuner, allowing you to modify the powertrain control module to change timing, A/F, and many other factors in increments of 100 RPM via the OBDII port.
My guess as to "tune" as you use it depends on who I hear talking. If I see someone sporting a freshly installed power adder I can say that when they say "getting this thing tuned will get me some extra power" simply is sitting time with a dyno and their management software to interface with the car (be it e-manage or one of the other alternatives) to produce a setup with a manageable amout of power but safe for their internals. My buddy has a PT Cruiser that he put a Hahn stage 2 turbo on. His only tuning thus far has been on the fuel pressure, but once he builds the engine he is going to take it to a reputable shop to tune it to specs to run the best power safely.
Now if it is someone with just a CAI and custom exhaust, or some other mild bolt on, I'd associate it with being an ignorant person.
I'd say number 1 sounds like a real enthusiast that just installed a new Vortech S/C but hasn't brought it into specs, the other 2 sound like guys that have no clue

You make a good point! Back in the days, the Tune" meant, you had it dialed in that day at that moment. Of course finding a tune" that works well every day. Is there such a thing?
IM trying in my personal car to find a better point to tune from. As long as people pay people to tune there car, they will never understand, What the tune is. I like the one that says! I have a safe tune. If people want a safe tune just take there keys away from them. I will stick with the term,,,,,,, Dialed in!
my car is desparately in need of a tune lol. i'm not F/I but i have done every intake and exhaust modification (ztube, popcharger, plenum spacer, headers, cats, y-pipe, and exhaust) and the stock ECU doesn't like it one bit. my AFR is in the high 14's and i'm making about as much RWHP as a stock 6MT coupe (granted i'm a 5AT but still that's low)... my car put down between 230-235whp
i will be adding a TurboXS UTEC (User Tuneable Engine Computer) in the next month or so, and will be dyno "tuning" my car at MRC Motorsports.
if someone doesn't have either a piggyback style controller (UTEC, eManage, uniChip, SS) or a full standalone engine management solution, there is no such thing as "getting a tune" on this car, aside from the virtually useless +/- 2 degrees of base timing and/or idle adjustment that the Consult II allows the dealership to input
