Unhappy Left knee pain from clutch

Lately, I've noticed a nagging pain in my left knee which seems to be from the clutch. Last night was the first time I actually had trouble sleeping because of my knee pain. I've changed the way I step on my clutch to compensate (I step on the pedal with the middle of my foot almost near the heel rather than on the ball of my foot).

I know that these clutches can be adjusted, and I've been reading up on past threads on this topic.

I was wondering if anyone had knee pain from the clutch, and had their pain go away after adjusting (lowering) the clutch pedal?

i think the g clutch is one of the lightests clutches i've ever used. although both my last acura's and mini cooper's were much shorter they were definitely stiffer to operate. i've got an 05. i've never had a problem with my left knee. i did have my right leg go numb from a terrible 6 hour stop-and-go traffic experience a few weeks ago though. but that's another story.

It sounds like a small adjustment in the pedal might help, but don't adjust too much. I've heard you could possibly experience syncro problems if you lower the engagement point too much. Also, try moving your seat a bit to see if that helps.

My last car was an Integra that I added a turbo to. First clutch with the turbo was a double diaphragm style clutch that was the most stiff clutch I've ever experienced. So, driving the G now is sweet, although I've noticed that it's still hard to get a smooth engagement in lower gears. Ah, it's probably just user error.

Most of the clutch pain that I've read about comes from the wallet area..

(easy killers - I was just kidding)

I believe it is because you are sitting to far away from the pedal. The ideal seating posture in a car is one in which you are sitting with your back up and your knees bent. Try driving with you seat closer to the steering wheel and see if that fixes anything.

Actually, I think I'm sitting very close to the pedals. I am very conscious of "proper" driving posture. If I were to fully engage the clutch, my knee is still in a bent position. The pain is felt during the high point of the clutch movement (meaning when my knee comes up to release the pedal).

I think you have a bad knee . Later in life it will get worse . Trade the car in for an Auto NOW and save your knee .

I doubt it's the clutch. It's actually one of the lighter ones I've owned. Have you done anything else that might have agravated it first?

I'm no doctor, but........

It sounds like you have pattelar tracking disorder. What that means is, your knee cap is sliding out of it's groove and causing inflamation and tenderness. If you have the same pain going down stairs, that's what it probably is. You should probably see a physical therapist and they will strengthen the muscles attached to the kneecap as well as treat the inflamation and pain. In the meantime, Ice for 20 min., wrap with an ace bandage, and take some ibuprofen. Good luck.

I sympathize completely.....
I have the same problem, except I know the reason for mine....
Football & hockey injuries have caught up to me.

This car is my first AT that I can remember (except my trucks),
I really miss the MT but my left knee is agonizing with the clutch pedal, especially in traffic.

I only hope that Infiniti comes out with a DSG some day.
I'll be all over it in a heart beat.

Yes, I have had 2 bad knees for the pass some 25 years. Lots of mogul skiing and long distance running were the culprits. My G's clutch is the lightest, which I have ever driven. That was one of my original issues with the MT. However, I have managed to adapt to it.

The G's clutch is very rarely a source of knee pain for me and I drive many city miles during the week. When my clutch is fully depressed, it is mostly my toes doing most of the work. Now, climbing stairs is a very different story.

Good to hear you've been able to adapt and enjoy the little extra fun a 6mt offers. I think some people have commented the '05 clutch is even a bit lighter than the previous years. I wouldn't know.

I'm a long distance runner myself but my knees are still fine.

I guess in SanFran driving a standard takes some skill. It's very hilly here too.

i actually have a lot of problems with my knee and the clutch. for some odd reason my clutch is SO stiff and has a very high engagement point. its so stiff that ive had valet and experienced stick drivers stall the car. i had it all replaced at the dealer when the tranny went out. TWICE!! but its very very stiff, i like it high but not that stiff for some reason. feels as bad as my cousins M3 clutch. its crazy. i have had recent knee surgery (torn patellar tendon) and had it "fixed" about a year later, find out it wasnt fixed and have still another tear in my left tendon. will need another operation one day but for now its painful in traffic.
