Talk me out of the Z convertible
The lease on my 03 sedan will be up in a year or so but that will put me in a weird replacement cycle. I wanted to get the next gen coupe but that will not be out until fall of next year, leaving me with basically a year gap. I don't want to get the new sedan because I'd like to change things up a little.
I've been thinking of getting a 350z convertible to fill in the gap. Maybe keep it for two years or something, then get the next gen G35 coupe. Since I don't know squat about the Z convertible (quality, is it too loud, does it suck because you can't recline the seats enough, lack of storage space, etc.), I need some opinions. If any of you have good first hand experience w/ the Z or convertible (and by that I mean more than a test drive or having ridden in one once) I'd appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Ray

quick question for those of you in the know, and sorry for the thread jack:
can you write off a car like the Z convertible as a company car? S2000? etc?
also, as far as the Z convertible goes:
probably puts out similar performance numbers as the G35 coupe, as it is slower, handles more sluggishly than the Z, etc etc. But, it has the same semi-lack luster interior of the Z coupe. So all in all, you get the worst of both worlds, but you DO get that whole convertible thing.

same here, im not a big fan of the convertible i duno its just not as nice as hte coupe, i say go for the coupe, or you can buy a cheap used car and then drive that around until the next g35 coupe comes out!
Commit yourself to Automotive Purgatory by buying a cheap car to drive until the new G Coupe comes out. I drove around a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck for a year as I waited (and $aved even more money) to buy my '05 Coupe with the upgraded interior bits, 19" wheels etc etc etc—and it was well worth the wait.
I was even happier about having waited when I had an '04 for a loaner, and I was reminded why I forced myself to wait for the upgrades in '05.
No regrets...except that I didn't get the navigation, which would've further bolstered the vehicles already stellar low depreciation rate

That being said, I looked at a Z-roadster and decided against it based on the cheap interior alone. I do miss it on the nicer days though.

Hey everyone, thanks for the posts. Yeah I went down to Universal Nissan to check some of the Z roadsters out. Cheap looking interior compared to the G and zero storage. Would make a cool 2nd car but I can't afford two. Don't think I can deal w/ it as a primary car. You guys did exactly what I asked, which was talk me out of it.
I wish my ego could deal w/ driving a cheap car for a year or two but it can't, to be brutally honest w/ myself. Cuz then I would just buy a used cop car and drive it like a complete maniac until it was time to get the coupe. I may check out the new sedan for a 2 year lease, or if it's sweet enough then maybe I'll purchase one and do some nice wheels + exhaust.
Thanks everyone.

All you got to do is take one look at the Z's interior and that should be enough. Some people on the forum say the G has a cheap looking interior, I disagree. I think the Z's have an ugly interior and a slightly less attractive exterior than the G.
While there are a select few convertible cars on the market that I like the look of, I've never been a big fan of a sports car without a roof. In trying to keep the most rigid chassis available, I waited a good while to take delivery of a coupe without even a sunroof.
And driving around at close to some SUV's and truck's bumper-heights, that added bit of aluminum and steel covering my head (and reinforcing the windshield pillars) makes me a bit more comfortable. Roll-overs would be another reason to opt for a real roof, IMO.

I actually considered the new Lexus GS...!
I have an IP 04 6mt and was seriously considering trading it in.
Tired of the 6mt in SF, but then again, I still love the car.
Why not extend the lease for another 12 mos or hop into another sedan lease for 24 mos and bail out of it in 12 mos and trade-it in for the next gen cpe.
Remember, having been in the car business, the first model year cars will always be "Over-Priced" usually by $2,000.00 - $5,000.00 above MSRP before adding on accessories....Availability will be limited and i'm sure there will be a long wait.
You're better off leasing a CPE for now 24mos short-term lease. This way, you can dump your 03 sedan, that's what I did, and upgraded to a cpe. I bought mine since I plan on keeping it for more than 5 years.
That's what I would do.
I love the roadster, but the quality is not there. It's a 2seater, higher insurance + convt. No back seat, no trunk space, no loaner car programs etc etc etc.
Might as well upgrad to a BMW sedan 4/50 free maint...even on a lease.
The new Lexus IS series, too small and over-priced.
Good luck man...!
BoBs =)
