I've been having a grinding noise from the back of the left wheel.

it's there when I cruise

noise gets worse when I brake

gets better when I drive at highway speeds or maybe the wind is hiding the noise.

it doesn't sound like I need to change the pads.

anyone know a mechanic that doesn't charge crazy prices?

it could either be your brakes or possibly wheel bearing gone bad.
