How does Triptronic Work??

When using the Triptronic feature on the automatic transmisison?
do you use it ike a manual?
do you need to gear down when stopping ?
does it save gas compared to drving in auto?
Is'nt it just like any other automatic transmission that has D1 D2 D3?

In manual mode you can upshift downshift on your own. When you start you are in 1st the car will not upshift on its own, if you dont it will eventually hit the rev limiter and cut power to the engine. The tranny does however downshift for you, if you are crusing in 4th and come to a complete stop it will go into 1st, and again you will have to upshift on your own. I dont think it saves gas, definatelly not for me, since I tend to keep it at higher rpms for longer.

It's not really about upshifting and downshifting into a gear like a manual at all. What you're doing is limiting the highest gear the auto will go into. So putting it on 5 is basically the exact same thing as drive. It can be useful when passing someone or going up a large hill where you want to keep the revs higher.

From a takeoff, the auto will usually be faster than the tiptronic will be.

Well no, you are talking about the sedan, thats different. The coupes tiptronic works exactly like I wrote, I know I have one. I figured he was asking about the coupe since he posted it under the Coupe General forum.

G35Gnome is correct, and Sicshift is wrong, as far as how the coupe manual mode works. In manual mode you must always shift the gears, up or down, to what you want. The only thing done automatically is that it automatically returns to 1st gear, but only when the car comes to a complete stop. I think it is a great system.
I would not be happy with the way it works on the sedan, which is just a maximum gear selector, like most other automatics.

Re: How does Triptronic Work??

yeah I was referring to the sedan. To be honest, I have no idea why anyone would get the coupe and not get a manual.

Re: How does Triptronic Work??

Cuz us old people (30)... get tired of shifting!!
But honestly I've had my share of sticks (last 2 cars) and it can be a pain in the rear when driving alot in the city..ie Boston......plus your girl can rest her head on your lap without gettin smacked in the head with the "stick" lol

It does take a little getting used to at first. It will gear down when you come to a stop by itself, but not gradually. The transition from 2 to 1 may sometimes feel a little rough. And, of course, your gear number is displayed just below the tach. Sometimes it's easy to forget you're in manual mode, so when you take off, you'll be quickly reminded.

Re: How does Triptronic Work??

dont really think that will help you to save on the gas ...the sedan and coupe is different... the sedan just like D1 D2 D3...when you stop your car.. you still could upshift your to 3 or 4 (sedan) ...

Re: How does Triptronic Work??

The primary reason MTs *can* consume less gas than ATs is because of better gearing (6 to 5). In manual mode in the AT, you're still using the same gears. Frankly, I would expect straight AT to use less gas because it loves keeping the rpms incredibly low.

On the other hand, I never get anywhere near the maximum mpg when I drive a MT car, except when the freeway is relatively clear. Around the city, attempting to keep rpms low just reminds me why I keep 1 AT car and 1 MT car. Stick is for fun. People who buy it for gas mileage are crusaders (or do a ton of freeway driving).
