The actual true break-in period of the engine is 500 miles. This is to let the gears settle in and get used to being worked and to sort of "learn" their function pattern. With 4-stroke engines, the only you think you need to worry about during their break-in period (1,200 miles) is to vary the rpm's (which also means don't use cruise control).
