IMHO...(AT/6MT)
IMHO...(AT/6MT)
I've read many a post stating they thought the G35 5AT Coupe felt quicker/faster than the 6MT. I'd just like to go on the record saying that after driving both a few times I'm going to have to disagree... To me the 6MT felt like it had more pick up. Anyone agree with me? (Both are sweet though, don't get me wrong)
Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
I just commented on that other thread and have to agree w/ you. As I said there basically, I test-drove the 5AT first and it felt like a 4-banger (no torque) off the line (my '95 Grand Am had a lot more get up and go than that), but when I drove the 6MT, I was hooked--finally could tell the torque was there! I think the 5AT must have some pretty poor low-end gearing or something (?).

Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
remember that's what you felt but it's not actually true... and AT g35 will murder 95 grand am anyday... if u test drove coupe did u put it in D or MM? if you put it in D mode than ECU won't use full potential due to adaptive drving style from driver... and NO ECU will not learn to use full potential within few miles(basically when you test drive)... however if u put it into MM mode, ECU will use full potential and will shift quicker than D mode... slips have been proved... i thought most people felt AT was fsater off the line(0-25mph) due to great tq converter... and MM and MT won't make that much difference in performance... MM runs just below 6sec while MT will do 5.4-6 at best... and about .2-.3 sec in 1/4mile.. that means if MT don't shift near perfectly, MT will lose to MM... and we should stop this AT vs. MT things now...
Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
It comes down to to the DRIVER. If the driver of the 6MT knows what he is doing, he will take the 5AT. However, most MT drivers, especially new ones, are not flawless shifters so that makes the 5AT driver in lead

Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
I think someone complained about the MM shifting of the G's alrdy. Anyway, with the 6MT you feel in total control. And you can do launching starts better. Plus the 6th gear is great for saving gas in highway cruising.

Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
I think the 6MT feels faster too, but I see where people are coming from when they say 5AT feels faster because the 5AT can feel torquier off the line because of its torque converter. However, after that, it's all parasitic. I truly think the MT in this car does an incredible amount for the driving experience. It's incredibly communicative and has awesome linkage - almost feels like the car is an extension of the driver.
Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
For normal driving I feel the AT is faster. I usually shift around 3K rpm. And because my shifter is still notchy, I don't get very quick shifts. I also don't stomp on the gas pedal...very little pressure is needed to move at a decent speed.
The AT sedan loaner I drove tended to shift around 2K and, of course, was quicker at shifting. So, to me it was quicker for the normal drives.
However, when no one's around, once in awhile I'll put the pedal to the floor and take first and second up to redline to remind myself how quick my car actually is.

the Manumatic sucks when I test drove the loaner. It took a good 2-3 seconds to shift. For some reason I thought it was instant like the SMG.

Wasn't talking about shifting the AT in manumatic mode...just the fact that the car itself tended to shift around 2k.
But I agree with you, the manumatic mode sucked so much that I didn't even bother with it. Just put the car in D and go =).

Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
THe MT puts more hp to the wheels than the AT. However, based on the daily drive city/surburban sometimes the choice is easier!

Re: IMHO...(AT/6MT)
Here is what I think. When I test drove the AT it felt fast, maybe because it only had a couple of miles on it. But as the time went on after I got the car is seemed to get faster and faster. I drive in MM at least 90% of the time. My upshifts take between half and one second and downshifts are instantenious. I feel there is a great difference betwen the D and MM mode in the auto. For sure the 6MT will be a bit faster considering its operated by an experienced driver with flawless shifting. And yes I could see how you feel more connected to the car with it. But I really like my auto and its MM mode I think its great, Everybody I have ever given a test drive in my ride said it was fast (I usually mostly shift at redline and gass the hell out of it when I do that) and thats people that drive M3's, supras, S4's. Everybody loves this car and has full resect for it even with the auto. But yea the one thing I hate the most when people ask me about it is: is it stick ? and I always have to say: nahhh its an auto, too bad huh ? lol I love it though.
