true or false? and for how long on a new car?

my friend and i have argued this forever. i need FACTS people. also, how long is the break in prior to installing a turbo and after until you can really start to punch it?

 

youre going to get all sorts of answers..

i would say break in period is at least 1k-2k miles..by that i mean i wouldnt drive too agressively in the first 1k-2k miles..

but thats just me..everyone has their own opinion..

the break in period is when youre ecu is suppose to learn how you drive and what not..

^+1 everyone has a different answer for this question. ive had a handfull of new motors in my time, and tried different ways with each. ive pretty much come to the conclusion... do whatever the hell you want. its not going to make a big difference. the one thing you SHOULD do, is change the oil at 1k-1500 miles.

+1 , Break-In your motor hard, by aggressive driving, and your motor will come out stronger in the end.

 

Really ive been effing the ishh outta my engine since 10 miles heh its at 800 miles now people said that will mess up the engine your saying its for the better? heh its a lease i dont care toooo much as long as i dont lose horsepower ultimately so driving harder = btr? hehe sweet!

 

The dealer told me that the factory people think no break-in period is required whatsoever as far as the engine is considered but they were more worried about the brakes getting broken in right for the first 1k or so. He told me it's ok to get close to the redline from the get go (even though I did wait for the first 1k before that) but that I need to keep from slamming on the brakes for a while. I don't know if that helps?

+2, I wouldn't race the thing for at least the 1st oil change but yeah pretty much drive normal (aggressive if thats normal for you) shouldn't make a big difference.

Isn't 1k-1500 miles kind of early for first oil change? I was told this should take around 3750 miles?

Normally I change my oil every 2500-3000 miles. First oil change is supposed to be a little longer from my experience.

Hmmm...yeah lots of opinions as in past posts.

Infiniti's manual states to keep her under 4000rpm for the first 1200mi.
I chose to follow what they recommended. If it didn't matter, then they wouldn't of published break-in recommendations for the engine.

IMO, the rings need to seat themselves in the beginning as well as the cam lobes and varing your rpm during this break-in period is the best way to do this...meaning no long consistant rpm runs like on long freeway road trips prior to 1200mi.
Again just my opinion and .02 worth.

As far as the ecu goes, just do a reset after the break-in period and that'll erase the first 1200mi of Granny mode it learned.
Then you can teach it to learn the right way.

 

not really. if you think about it, thats when most of the (if any) metal shavings are going to happen, so why not get them out of the motor asap. that my opinion at least.

I drove it like i stole it after the first 500 miles and have been driving it that way for the last 22000 miles. It still runs strong as ever and i love every minute of it. I changed my oil to mobil1 after 2000 miles.

The dealer is blowing smoke up your @ss. You can break in the brake pads within 10 minutes of driving. Do 4-5 moderate stops from 35mph but dont stop the car all the way, then do another 3-4 stops from 45 and your brakes should be broken in.
