HomeLink range and F to C

As a newbie, I have a couple of technical questions.

Is there a way to increase the range of the HomeLink system? I have to pull up pretty close to the garage door to make it work. I wish I could open it as I approach and align to enter. Maybe I should hold my original remote closer to the mirror when I program HomeLink? Is there any other trick that could help me?
As far as I understood from the search that I did, there is no easy way to switch the ambient temperature gauge and A/C controls from Fahrenheit to Celcius on a '06 coupe. Is it true?
