If it's a sedan, the number isn't the current gear, it's the maximum gear.. so if it says "3" then the car will use 1, 2, and 3 like a 3-speed tranny.
If it's a coupe, when it downshifts it drops the number, so when you come to a complete stop, it'll drop to "1" and you'll have to upshift if you ever want to get into "2" or higher.
