i think its time for a new filter. wut shud i do? get a k&n or order a CAI?

k&n, too many problems with CAI

 

IMO...K&N filters don't really save money and time because #1: OEM filter costs $7.20 vs K&N $39.95. That means it'll take you 5-1/2 times replacing the oem to get your money's worth of the K&N (82,500 miles). #2: K&N recharger kit costs $9.95 and I don't even know how many times one kit will clean. #3: Definitely not time saving because you'll have to remove it carefully not to damage the K&N filter, wash it, oil it up and put it back in. Don't forget if you use too much oil, it could get your MAF sensor going crazy.

I bought the damn thing since people reported getting better mileage and boy I swear I'm getting like 10 miles less with the K&N. Oh well...

 

You can get K&Ns for like $25 in ebay etc... It's a p/n that also fits maximas etc.... It's a breeze to clean and reoil. Only a monkey could screw it up. haha

Plus, the paper element should be changed every 10-12k or so? That's 7 or 8 times in 82k.

k & n = worse air filtration

 

In my maxima I was actually able to feel a difference with the K&N, in the G the design of the airbox makes the K&N's advantages miniscule. I'm back using the OEM filter, and for some reason I'm convinced the inside of my engine gets a lot less dirt.

 

Do an oil analysis with an oem filter and with the k & n... compare the two and you'll have your reason

 

I have had my cold air for months with no problem. I'm now lookin to get rid of the car so i'm selling it but I have no problems with it on my 06 6mt coupe. and its lowered, i drive in the pouring rain, etc...

 

You won't be able to directly see any problems (unless you detect how much more dirt is getting through). Since the problems are with
air filtration, you'll only be able to feel the difference when the
engine wears out - sooner than it was designed to. If you want a true
understanding, do an oil analysis and see how your silicon #s will
shoot up with a k & n type filter.

 

Bythabay, how would one do an oil analysis? I'm curious because I switched to the K&N drop in filter a month ago and now you've got me alarmed...

Next time you're chaning your oil, let it drain for about three seconds and then catch a small sample.
