Exclamation Tire Question need answer ASAP!!!

I need two new back tires ASAP!!! Somebody screwed a nail in my back side wall...but I needed new tires anyway, just trying to hold off, but don’t want to spend $266 each for Michelins. I’m thinking of a pair of continental contiextreme contact for the backs. Its an Ultra high performance all-season tire for a $135 each.

Check it out:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ExtremeContact

My question is can I use the continental in the back while I still have Michelins in the front??? Will it affect handling at all?

The reason for this also is winter is coming and now I commute everyday to work. They also match the Michelins pretty well in all categories, plus they have snow traction. All help would be greatly appreciated.

This site is awesome Thanks all

Right now i have continental's and i can say the SUCK. When it rains i slide all over the place. I commute everday to work just as you . When it rains, i get scared as hell. I go 20 below the speed limit around my neighborhood just to be safe .

Im planning on switching over to Avons in the rear and leave the front alone. I don't think it will hurt performance, but new tires would def help with traction.

Just giving you the heads up those Continental's.

I will not mix tires. Especially high performance tires. All brands/types behave differently. I know others have done it on this forum. I wouldn't. If you want an option to the conti's check these out. Falken Tires ZE-512.
They are Z rated and get very good reviews. I put some on my son's GTI and they ride and perform very nice.

Summer on the front and All-season on the back is a big NO-NO!

I'm not an expert in tires, why would it be horrible?

why not just pony up some cash and get a matching set, and buy the tire replacement for the next time

One thing about those Falkens ... they are great during the first half of the treadlife then become horrible after that. Read any tire forum. I'm not sure why Consumer Reports rated them so high ... guess they didn't test them long enough.

Why not try out Toyo T1-R?

My $0.02 ...

+1 on the Toyo's, but I'm pretty sure there's no snow traction with those bad boys...

I'm in the "Don't mix and match tires" camp too...Tires are what keep you connected to the road--I'd want to be sure that everything was consistent and normal at all 4 corners...

Why not go with a true winter tire till spring and then get new high performance summer tires. Probably cheaper than all season and all season is a bad compromise. Doesn't do anything well. Tire companies changed "Fall Season" to "All Season" just to sell more tires. Not much better snow traction than a regular tire.

you can use www.tirerack.com as your reference on each brand of tire and you can check their review. I personally think Good Year Eagle F1 GS-D3 has the best wear, noise, dry & wet review.

Need to read lease agreement to determine if you get spanked on the tires.

There's a difference between mixing street tires and slicks, and just mixing two different type of street tires. doing the latter is fine. The first mistake my buddies made when we started AutoXing was trying to put licks on the back or the front (depending on the drivetrain) for "extra grip". It's the easiest way to spin out every time on the street or track when you are pushing it. It doesn't really make a hell of a lot of difference when you are mixing regular or even "high performance" street tires. Lastly, what you pay for tires is usually what you get, so I would rethink your scheme here and pay the extra $ for better tires (not neccessarily your stock tires which are pretty nice).
