please, let's not start this again. the thread asked about when to shift in manumatic mode. there are already lots of threads that say 'you shoulda got a 6mt if youre gonna use tiptronic anyway'
well, it's sorta late for that now, isnt it? people with 5at's have their reasons. including myself. i use tiptronic a lot so i guess i coulda got a 6mt. but i drive in traffic a lot and do a lot of city stop and go driving so the 5at was a better choice for me.
anyway...
a lot of 5at's that i know shift around 3k for daily driving because of the lag. the lag is annoying but you learn to compensate for it.

Acceleration? (high rpm)
Fuel economy? (low-med rpm)
Drivetrain life? (low rpm)
Comfort? (med rpm)
Each has a theoretical optimum when compared with throttle position.
