Painted OEM Grill Owners Please Help!
Well, a month or two ago I painted my OEM grill black. I put 3 coats primer, 3 coats paint and 4 coats clearcoat. Now I notice that there are little chips all over my grill.. I thought it was just bug splatter, but upon closer inspection, it looks horrible...
Anyways, my question is, to repaint my grill, do I need to sand it then primer it again or what would you suggest? Also, is there anything I can do different to help it last longer this time? Thanks a lot!

yes, i've noticed a couple small chips in mine. but i hardly drive, let alone on the freeway, so its not bad. i guess it depends on how far the chips go down. if its all the way to the "oem" part, then yes you will have to sand it all down, so everythings smooth and flat and do it all over again. what kind of paint did you use? i would recommend that dulicolor brand, thats like OEM paint in a can, it won't match prefectly, but that paint i think is suppose to be strong like out OEM paint, but even that gets chip on the front bumpers.

I used Krylon...I wonder if this Duplicolor stuff is much of a difference? I have a hard time telling if it is chipped down to the primer or if it is down to the sanded plastic. When I repaint it, should I sand all the paint off or just sand the paint so its smooth and then primer again... :0(
they have an aerosol paint stripper or you can get the kind you brush on...just make sure after you prep your grill you wipe it down with alcohol to remove any oil then primer it 2-3 coats while sanding in between, then shoot it with the paint...clear it after the paint cures

Before replacing my grille OR painting it black I T E S T E D the appearance with some black vinyl tape. If you choose to keep it on it won't chip or crack and you can change it back to stock OR PAINT IT.
BTW FWIW
I never said " keep it on the grille for phuking ever" ...... I'd rather be able to see what the grille looks like T E M P O R A R I LY and be able to change it back right away without whining " oooooooooh I painted it and I don't like it! "
You naysayers missed the point of the posting altogether Sheeeeeeeeeeeeesh!
I still have my original grille..... (unpainted) and the one I replaced it with.
So don't be so critical, it was an IDEA not a DIRECTIVE... get a life.
"Ghetto" maybe. But you used the word..... the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in most cases!

I'm sorry, but this is the most ghetto thing I've ever heard anyone do to his car.

You Can Not Powder Coat Plastic, It Is Impossible. How Can You Power Coat Plastic. For Powder Coat To Work, It Needs To Go In A Overn That Is Several Hundred Degress I Believe 400 Degrees, The Plastic Will Melt!
