no... i think they are too! dont do it!

to me, a DD should be a 'meat-n-potatos' kind of car. i see alot of these guys talking about a hybrid and so on. thats ok, but a hybrid really isnt going to save you any money. yes youll save on gas, but long term maint. (batteries) forget it! its already been proven. plus, thats like spending a quarter to save a nickle.
i see you said youre in socal, so snow isnt an issue. a 98 civic, impreza, corolla etc. would be where id start. afterall, it IS a DD, so who cares about style. good gas milage, cheap to buy, and cheap to maintain. thats what you should be looking at. (assuming youre getting a DD to save money)

92-95 civic hatchback. 40 mpg, a/c, heater, easy to fix.

ahh, thanks for your opinion! you're actually the first guy to type up a paragraph with explanaion, for that, thanks.

and yes, I am just looking for good gas milage, at a fairly decent price, and something that I can self maintain without problems. However, I am slightly weary of style, as I would rather not get caught driving an Aztec or such.

I'm looking for:
a small car to fit in the garage
good mileage
not a performance car
preferably price range <25k

Current Ideas:
used Nissan 240sx
Mini Cooper (too femenine?)
07 Civic sedan
Toyota Corolla
Mazda Miata (also too femenine?)
used Integra
(feel free to suggest any others)

Scion
Impreza

oh, and if you have another DD, please mention it as well

One idea to rule them all. Older Nissan Maxima. Keep with the Nissan engine, and rule the world. My '94 maxima has 160k on it and runs perfect, not a drop of oil burns, etc. Excellent daily....still get 25 mpg highway too.

^ id say you got a good motor. im not sure that the whole maxima fleet has the same results. plus, parts are more than a civic or something.

I should consider scions, which one were you suggesting?
tC 23-30mpg
xA 31-38
xB 30-34

I think it really depends on what you plan on using your car for. Do you need storage space? Something more sporty? It is really hard for me to suggest one since I do not know you personally. But I think as far as being versitile the XB would be a nice choice. Even though it does kind of look like a tissue box, I think that it has a very practical design. Plus I think with the amount of room that you will have the MPG is pretty decent. Plus you have all the choices in the world when it comes to modding and tinkering with the car if you wanted to.

I would say no way on the xB. That thing is uglier than a hairless cat!

I would go with a civic. They are kinda sporty and if you want you can put a body kit on it to make it look better and the gas mileage on those things is awesome.
