Check the vent between the driver's side door and the steering wheel. I started hearing a rattle in the same area and found that if I put my finger on the vent (specifically, the little tab that you use to direct the air flow), the rattle would go away. Its not a permanent fix, but at least you might get closer to finding the source of the noise.
